Chapter 10 - The Sunlight on the Coast

A year later.

The ocean breeze washed over the dramatic cliffs of Big Sur, carrying the clean, sharp scent of wild sage and salt water.

I walked along the wooden trail overlooking the Pacific Ocean, wearing a comfortable knitted sweater and jeans, my hair blowing gently in the wind. Beside me walked David, an architectural restorer I had met six months prior through my gallery work.

David was gentle, soft-spoken, and possessed a quiet, unshakeable integrity that didn't require loud declarations or grand financial displays. He listened when I spoke, respected my boundaries, and loved me for precisely who I was.

We stopped near a wooden overlook, watching the giant blue waves crash against the golden rocks below, sending clouds of white spray into the afternoon sun.

David reached down, gently taking my hand into his. He didn't squeeze too tightly; he simply held it, warm and steady against the cool coastal wind.

I looked down at our joined hands, then up at the endless blue horizon stretching out before us.

Two years ago, I had sat at a wedding reception in a heavy dress, holding my burning cheek, believing that my life was over before it had even begun. I had thought that the hand striking my face was the end of my story.

Now, standing on the edge of the world with the sun warming my face, I knew the truth.

That slap hadn't been the end of my life.

It had been the alarm clock that woke me up—the moment I chose courage over comfort, truth over illusion, and my own dignity over a liar's ring.

I smiled, squeezing David's hand, and walked forward into the bright, endless light of my future.
