Chapter 5 - The Trap Closes

By mid-afternoon, the festive atmosphere of the suite had shifted into a high-stakes command center.

Marcus arrived with two senior partners from Denver’s premier criminal defense and corporate litigation firm, carrying thick leather briefcases and stacks of certified financial affidavits.

“Mr. Prescott,” the lead attorney, a sharp-eyed woman named Sarah Vance, greeted him briskly as she shook his hand. “We’ve reviewed the preliminary forensic data provided by your executive team. The paper trail connecting Julian Prescott to the unauthorized stock transfers and forged communication logs is airtight.”

Damon stood by the window, watching the snow continue to blanket downtown Denver. Luke and Violet were sitting on the rug a few yards away, happily building a massive tower out of wooden blocks with one of their new toys, completely insulated from the heavy legal machinery operating around them.

“How fast can we move?” Damon asked without turning around.

“We can file an emergency injunction in federal court within the hour,” Sarah replied, opening her briefcase and laying out several formal documents. “Given the interstate nature of the wire fraud and the forgery of legal and personal communications, we can also request an immediate bench warrant for his arrest on charges of grand larceny, identity theft, and corporate sabotage.”

“Do it,” Damon said coldly.

“There’s more,” Marcus added, stepping forward with his tablet. “When Julian realized the Merritt acquisition fell through this morning, he tried to access the corporate reserve accounts to cover a margin call on his personal stock portfolio. He’s exposed, Damon. He leveraged his entire personal stake in Prescott Industries against a speculative real estate play that just went belly-up. If we freeze his assets now, he’s completely wiped out.”

Damon turned around slowly, his expression devoid of pity. Julian had spent three years systematically destroying Damon’s family, sabotaging his personal life, and stealing from his accounts under the assumption that Damon would never look up from his spreadsheets.

“He wanted an empire,” Damon said quietly. “Let’s see how he likes living in a cell.”

Cassandra walked over from the play area, standing beside Damon. She looked down at the legal documents spread across the mahogany table, then up at Damon’s face. There was no hesitation in his eyes, no corporate double-talk or hesitation. He was completely, utterly committed to clearing away every obstacle that stood between their past betrayal and their future.

“Are you sure about this, Damon?” Cassandra asked softly. “He’s still family.”

“He stopped being family the moment he wrote those four words on your letter,” Damon replied, his voice firm as he placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “He tried to erase you. He tried to erase my children. Nobody does that and walks away.”

Sarah Vance nodded, gathering the papers back into her briefcase. “I’ll personally walk these filings over to the federal magistrate’s chambers. We’ll have the asset freeze and the arrest warrant executed before nightfall.”

As Sarah and Marcus hurried out of the suite to execute the legal strike, the room settled back into a quiet, expectant calm.

Luke tugged at the hem of Damon’s trousers. “Daddy, look! The tower is tall!”

Damon looked down, his hard, corporate exterior melting away instantly as he knelt down beside his son. “That’s an incredible tower, buddy. Let’s add one more block right on top.”

Cassandra watched them, a profound sense of peace finally settling into her chest for the first time in three years. The storm outside was raging louder, but inside, the foundation of a brand-new life was finally being built.
