Chapter 9 - Rebuilding Home

That evening, a private celebration was held at the Blackwell estate on Beacon Hill.
The grand house was filled with warmth, music, and light. Fresh flowers filled every vase, and the aroma of roasted herbs, fresh bread, and rich wine drifted through the high-ceilinged rooms.
In the backyard garden, under a canopy of twinkling fairy lights strung between the ancient oak trees, friends, family, and colleagues laughed and raised glasses in celebratory toasts.
Victoria Sterling raised a glass of champagne toward Valentina. "To the CEO who conquered Wall Street, destroyed a corporate conspiracy, and changed the face of medicine forever."
"To Valentina!" the crowd cheered, raising their glasses high.
Valentina smiled, taking a small sip of champagne, before slipping away from the crowd toward the quiet rear of the garden where a new brick pathway had been laid out over the winter.
Sitting on a wooden bench near the blooming rose bushes was Griffin. He had removed his suit jacket, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, watching Sophia and Lily chase glowing fireflies across the lawn with Dr. Waffles sitting securely on the bench beside him.
Valentina walked over, her silk outfit rustling softly against the grass, and sat down beside him.
"You survived the press conference," Valentina teased gently, resting her head against his arm.
"Barely," Griffin chuckled, wrapping his arm around her waist, pulling her close. "I'm a surgeon, Valentina. Giving speeches to two thousand people is far more terrifying than open-spine surgery."
"You did wonderfully," she said softly. "The medical board fully restored your surgical credentials this afternoon. Mass General called an hour ago offering you the Chair of Neurological Surgery."
Griffin paused, looking out at the children laughing under the fairy lights.
"I declined," he said quietly.
Valentina pulled back slightly, looking up into his face in surprise. "You declined? Griffin, that was your dream before..."
"Before I realized what really matters," Griffin interrupted gently, cupping her cheek with his warm hand. "I don't want to run a massive hospital department, Valentina. I want to run the Hayes Institute with you. I want to treat patients who have no hope left. And most of all... I want to be home for dinner every night with my family."
Valentina felt a deep, overwhelming wave of emotion swell in her chest. She placed her hand over his, leaning into his touch.
"Family," she murmured, the word sounding like the sweetest music she had ever heard.
Griffin reached into his trousers pocket, pulling out a small, simple velvet box.
Valentina’s breath hitched in her throat.
"I didn't buy a diamond from a high-end store on Newbury Street," Griffin said, his voice dropping into a tender, nervous cadence as he opened the box.
Inside sat a beautiful, antique gold ring set with a single, brilliant sapphire—her father’s favorite gemstone.
"Your father gave this ring to me two weeks before he died," Griffin whispered, his blue eyes searching hers with complete, total devotion. "He told me that if I ever met a woman brave enough to change the world with me, I should give it to her. I didn't know then that he was talking about his daughter."
Griffin looked deep into her eyes. "Valentina Blackwell... will you do me the honor of marrying me? Will you let me love you, protect you, and stand beside you for the rest of our lives?"
Valentina didn't hesitate for a single micro-second.
"Yes," she choked out, tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilling over her eyelashes. "Yes, Griffin! A thousand times yes!"
He slipped the gold ring onto her finger—a perfect fit.
Griffin leaned in, pressing his lips to hers in a deep, passionate, reverent kiss that carried the weight of every storm they had weathered, every battle they had fought, and every miracle they had built together.
From across the lawn, two small voices suddenly squealed in absolute delight.
"They're kissing! They're kissing!" Lily yelled, jumping up and down.

"Dr. Waffles says it's official!" Sophia shouted, running over on her strong, healthy legs, dragging Lily by the hand. "Mommy and Dr. Griffin are getting married!"
The two little girls hurled themselves onto the wooden bench, throwing their arms around Valentina and Griffin, turning the romantic proposal into a chaotic, joyous pile of laughter, hugs, and kisses under the twinkling fairy lights.
