Chapter 9 - The Legacy of Grace

That evening, after the guests had departed and the stars began to twinkle brightly across the clear Hudson Valley sky, Lily and I sat together on the porch swing.
The gentle creak of the wooden chain echoed softly into the quiet night.
Lily held a small leather-bound journal in her lap—a gift I had given her for her graduation.
"Aunt Claire?" Lily asked softly, turning her head toward me.
"Yes, sweetie?"
"Do you ever regret what happened at the wedding?" she asked, her hazel eyes reflecting the starlight. "Do you ever wish... you had just let it go?"
I took a deep breath of the cool, night air, smelling the sweet scent of blooming jasmine from the garden.
"Not for a single second, Lily," I answered truthfully. "If I had swallowed my pain that night... if I had let them edit that video and hide the truth... we would still be trapped in that house. You would still be suffering in silence. Mark would still be terrified to speak. And I would still believe that my feelings didn't matter."
Lily leaned her head gently against my shoulder, wrapping her arm through mine.
"You taught me how to breathe again, Aunt Claire," Lily whispered, her voice filled with a profound, eternal love. "When I was suffocating in that room... you reminded me to put my feet on the floor."

I wrapped my arm around my niece, pulling her close, resting my cheek against her soft hair.
"And your feet are on the floor now, Lily," I murmured. "Solid, strong, and completely free."
