Chapter 10 - A New Sunrise

Spring arrived in the city three months later, bringing with it a vibrant burst of green leaves to the trees lining the east side streets and warm, golden sunlight that washed over the bustling neighborhood.
The front windows of Sterling & Miller Bakery gleamed brightly in the morning light. A new wooden sign hung above the door, carved with clean, elegant lettering.
Inside, the shop was packed. The sweet, rich aroma of fresh cinnamon rolls and artisanal coffee filled the air. Customers chatted cheerfully at the wooden tables, and the sound of laughter and warm conversation drowned out the distant hum of city traffic.
Behind the counter, Elena wore her blue baker's apron, expertly boxing up pastries for a regular customer with a bright, welcoming smile.
A few feet away, Julian stood by the large display case, handing a fresh tray of croissants to a young family while joking warmly with the children. His hands were calloused, his flannel shirt rolled up at the elbows—a far cry from the tailored suits and glass towers of his past, and a thousand times more fulfilling.
Through the front window, Viktor walked past on the sidewalk. He stopped for a brief second, looking through the glass at his family working together in the warm, morning light. He didn't go inside; he didn't need to. He simply offered a small, approving nod, a quiet smile touching his face, before continuing down the sunny street.
Elena looked up, catching Julian’s eye across the crowded shop.
She smiled—not the forced, rehearsed smile of a high-society bride standing on cold cathedral steps, but a real, radiant smile born of hard work, freedom, and true love.
Julian winked back, sliding the last pastry into a box and handing it to a smiling customer.
