Chapter 1 - The Locked Nursery

The brass key felt surprisingly heavy in my palm.

For weeks leading up to the night Claire packed her suitcase, she had kept the nursery locked. At the time, wrapped up in my own arrogance and distracted by my affair with a club owner named Victoria, I had assumed Claire was simply being overly protective of her quiet space. I had assumed she was picking out wallpaper, organizing infant clothes, or painting murals in solitude.

I was wrong.

I inserted the key into the tumbler and turned it. The lock disengaged with a dull, heavy click that echoed through the quiet corridor of our high-rise penthouse.

Michael stood a few paces behind me, his hand resting near his jacket where his sidearm sat hidden. "Daniel, if there’s something in there you aren't ready to see..."

"Stay outside," I commanded, my voice hollow.

I pushed the door open.

The scent hit me first—not the clean, powdery fragrance of baby lotion or new cotton, but the faint, chemical tang of fresh ink and paper. The room was illuminated only by the pale moonlight filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking downtown Chicago.

I reached for the light switch and flipped it.

The overhead chandelier flooded the room with brilliant white light, and my breath hitched in my throat.

There was no crib. There were no stuffed animals, no pastel-colored blankets, no changing tables.

Instead, three folding tables had been arranged in a semi-circle across the hardwood floor. Stacked neatly upon them were dozens of manila folders, printed financial ledgers, encrypted flash drives, and high-resolution photographs pinned to a corkboard on the far wall.

I stepped closer to the corkboard, my stomach plummeting into a pit of icy dread.

Pinned to the left side were photographs of Victoria—the woman I had foolishly allowed into my bed over the last six months. But the photos weren't just of Victoria and me entering boutique hotels in River North. They showed Victoria meeting secretly in alleyways, underground parking garages, and dark steak-houses with men I knew all too well.

Men from the Moretti Syndicate—my fiercest rivals in the Chicago construction and freight distribution sector.

"What is this?" I muttered to myself, my trembling hands reaching for a thick leather binder sitting on the center table.

I flipped it open. On the first page, in Claire’s neat, elegant handwriting, was a detailed timeline titled: PROJECT JANUS: INTERNAL INFILTRATION & EMBEZZLEMENT.

For seven months, while I thought Claire was at home resting, coping with her pregnancy, and quietly enduring my growing emotional absence, she had been conducting a full-scale forensic audit of my entire empire.

She hadn't just discovered my affair with Victoria. She had discovered that Victoria was a plant—a honeypot deployed by the Morettis to gain access to my private bank accounts, shell companies, and port access keys. Victoria was feeding my business intelligence directly to my enemies, draining millions from my holding accounts while keeping me distracted with alcohol and ego.

And Claire had traced every single dollar.

I flipped to the back of the binder. Taped to the final page was a small, sealed envelope with my name written across the front in Claire’s handwriting.

My hands shook violently as I tore open the seal and pulled out a single sheet of paper.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, I am already gone, and you have finally opened the door you ignored for months. You thought I was naive. You thought I was a fragile wife who didn't see the lipstick on your collars or the lies in your eyes. But I spent six years learning how your world works, Daniel. I know how you think, and I know how your enemies think.

Victoria didn't happen by accident. She was placed in your path because the Morettis knew your ego was growing faster than your caution. While you were distracted by her, your empire was being picked clean from the inside. I intercepted the financial transfers and redirected $14 million of your stolen assets into a secure, untraceable trust fund for our daughter.

I didn't leave you just because you cheated on me, Daniel. I left because you became reckless. You brought the enemy into our lives, and you were too blind to see it. I will not raise my child in a house built on borrowed time.

Do not look for me until you have cleaned your house. If you come for us before then, you will bring the Morettis straight to our daughter's cradle.

— Claire

I dropped the paper onto the table, leaning heavily against the wood as a wave of sheer, unadulterated shame washed over me.

"Daniel?" Michael called out from the doorway, stepping into the room. He took one look at the corkboard, the ledgers, and the photos of Victoria with the Moretti enforcers, and his face turned ghastly white. "Jesus Christ..."

"Call a full lockdown of the executive team," I ordered, my voice dropping into a register colder and more dangerous than anything I had summoned in years. "Find Victoria. Bring her to the warehouse on 14th Street. And do not let a single person know Claire is gone."
