Chapter 7 - The Great Accounting

The annual shareholders' meeting of Hawthorne AeroSystems was held in the grand auditorium of the Denver Convention Center. More than five hundred major investors, journalists, and industry analysts filled the seats. Julian Vance stood at the stage podium, a confident, arrogant smile on his face as he displayed the new corporate military expansion plans on a massive digital screen.

"As we honor the memory of our late founder, Nathan Hawthorne," Julian said into the microphone, his voice dripping with false solemnity, "we must move forward into a new era of defense profitability. Today, the board officially requests a vote to permanently restructure the voting shares, finalizing the transition of power."

Before the investors could raise their digital voting paddles, the heavy double doors at the back of the auditorium swung open with a loud thud.

The bright house lights caught the silhouette of three people walking down the center aisle.

Ava Hawthorne walked on the left, her head held high like a queen. On the right walked Daniel Mercer, wearing a crisp new suit, holding little Lily’s hand.

And between them walked Nathan Hawthorne.

The auditorium fell into a dead, terrifying silence. A journalist in the third row gasped, dropping her tablet onto the floor. Then, a low murmur grew into a roaring wave of shock as the faces of the investors recognized the man from the old corporate portraits.

"What... what is the meaning of this?" Julian stammered from the stage, his face turning an oily shade of green. "Security! Clear the aisle! This is a private corporate meeting!"

"This is my company, Julian," Nathan’s voice boomed through the hall, clear, powerful, and utterly commanding. He didn't need a microphone. His voice carried the authority of a man who had built the very walls they stood within.

Nathan walked up the stage stairs, ignoring the frozen security guards. He stepped up to the podium, looking directly at Julian Vance.

"Eight years ago, I survived a disaster," Nathan said, turning to face the stunned audience of shareholders and flashing cameras. "I lost my memory, but I did not lose my soul. While I was gone, certain members of this board attempted to turn a company built on safety and human progress into a war machine. They tried to declare me insane. They tried to threaten my wife."

Nathan pulled out the certified medical documents from his jacket and slammed them onto the podium.

"My name is Nathan Hawthorne. I hold fifty-one percent of the controlling voting stock of Hawthorne AeroSystems. And my first official act upon my return..." He turned his head, his gray eyes locking onto Julian with absolute finality. "...is to terminate Julian Vance and the entire executive board for corporate treason, effective immediately."

The auditorium erupted into absolute pandemonium. Investors stood on their chairs cheering, journalists scrambled to broadcast the news live to the world, and Julian Vance dropped to his knees, his face buried in his hands as federal agents—whom Ava had quietly alerted hours before—stepped onto the stage to arrest him for financial fraud.

Nathan looked out at the chaos, then down at the front row where Ava, Daniel, and Lily stood. He smiled, a genuine, warm smile that had nothing to do with money or power.
