Chapter 3 – “The Secret Vanessa Tried to Bury”

The photograph was only a few inches wide.

But to Dominic Whitmore, it felt like a weapon.

He stared at the screen in his office, unable to look away.

There was Elena.

His employee.

The woman who had worked quietly in his home for two years.

The woman who had never asked for anything beyond her paycheck.

The woman who had spent more time caring for his daughter than most people he knew.

And in the picture…

She was holding a small velvet box.

A jewelry box.

One that looked painfully familiar.

Dominic’s stomach tightened.

Because he knew that box.

It belonged to Vanessa.

Or at least, it was supposed to.

The necklace inside had been a gift he bought for Vanessa three months earlier.

A rare diamond piece.

A symbol of trust.

A symbol of their future.

The email beneath the photograph contained only a few words.

You should know who you let into your home.

No name.

No explanation.

Just enough to plant a seed of doubt.

And doubt was dangerous.

Especially when someone knew exactly where to place it.

Dominic leaned back in his chair.

His first instinct was anger.

His second was suspicion.

But his third instinct—the one he had built his entire career on—was investigation.

Never react before knowing the truth.

That principle had made him successful.

It had saved his company countless times.

And now he needed it more than ever.

He enlarged the image.

Studied every detail.

The lighting.

The angle.

The background.

Something felt wrong.

Not obviously wrong.

Subtly wrong.

The kind of wrong that most people missed.

Dominic zoomed in.

The photograph had been cropped.

He noticed it immediately.

The original image had been edited.

Someone had removed the surrounding context.

Someone wanted him to see only one thing.

Elena holding the box.

Not why she had it.

Not where she was.

Not what was happening.

Only enough information to create suspicion.

Dominic closed his eyes.

“Who are you protecting, Vanessa?”

He whispered the question.

Because suddenly…

He wasn’t sure the answer was Elena.

That morning, Elena arrived at the Whitmore estate expecting another difficult day.

After yesterday’s conversation with Dominic, she felt something she hadn’t felt in years.

Hope.

Small.

Fragile.

Dangerous.

She had forgotten what hope felt like.

Hope made people vulnerable.

Because when you expected nothing, disappointment couldn’t hurt you.

But when you started believing things could change…

Everything became scarier.

She walked into the kitchen with Rosa holding her hand.

The little girl immediately looked around.

“Lily?”

Elena smiled.

“She’ll come soon.”

Rosa nodded happily.

Then she noticed something.

The kitchen table.

The same table where she had once sat beside Lily.

She looked at it.

Then at the floor.

Her smile disappeared for a moment.

Elena noticed.

Her heart broke.

A three-year-old child should not remember humiliation.

Children should remember cartoons.

Birthday cakes.

Songs.

Not the feeling of being unwanted.

Elena knelt beside her.

“Rosa.”

Her daughter looked at her.

“You belong everywhere Mama is.”

Rosa smiled.

“Everywhere?”

“Yes.”

“Even castles?”

Elena laughed softly.

“Yes, baby.”

“Even with princesses?”

“Especially with princesses.”

Rosa giggled.

And for a moment, everything felt normal.

Until Dominic entered.

He looked different.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

His expression was controlled.

Too controlled.

Elena immediately noticed.

Something had happened.

“Good morning, Mr. Whitmore.”

“Good morning, Elena.”

His eyes moved toward Rosa.

Then back to Elena.

“Can we speak privately?”

Her heart dropped.

She had seen that expression before.

The expression people wore before delivering bad news.

“Of course.”

She followed him into his office.

Rosa stayed with Mrs. Hargrove.

The door closed.

Dominic remained standing.

“Elena.”

“Yes?”

“I need to ask you something.”

She waited.

“Have you ever taken anything from this house?”

The question felt like a slap.

Elena stared at him.

“What?”

“Jewelry. Personal items. Anything belonging to Vanessa.”

Her face changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

Pure pain.

Because the accusation wasn’t about an object.

It was about trust.

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

“I would never do that.”

Dominic watched her carefully.

“I received a photograph.”

Her hands tightened.

“A photograph?”

He showed her the screen.

The moment she saw it, confusion replaced fear.

Then disbelief.

Then sadness.

“Oh.”

That was all she said.

“Oh.”

Dominic frowned.

“You recognize it?”

“Yes.”

“Explain.”

Elena looked at the image.

Then quietly:

“I was returning it.”

“Returning it?”

She nodded.

“Miss Cole left it in the garden.”

Dominic froze.

“When?”

“Last week.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Elena looked surprised.

“Because I gave it to her.”

“Directly?”

“Yes.”

“Then why is there a picture of you holding it?”

Elena hesitated.

And that hesitation told Dominic something.

“There’s more.”

Elena looked down.

“Miss Cole was angry.”

“Why?”

“Because Lily was playing with Rosa.”

Dominic’s expression darkened.

“She told me…”

Elena stopped.

“Told you what?”

She swallowed.

“She told me that people like us should remember where we belong.”

Silence.

Dominic felt something inside him shift.

Because this wasn’t about jewelry.

It never was.

It was about control.

Meanwhile, upstairs, Vanessa was preparing her next move.

She stood in front of her mirror.

Perfect hair.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect smile.

But her reflection looked different.

Angrier.

She had spent years building this version of herself.

The elegant woman.

The generous woman.

The woman everyone admired.

And she refused to let a maid destroy it.

Her phone rang.

She answered immediately.

“Did you send it?”

A male voice replied.

“Yes.”

“And?”

“He looked at it.”

“Good.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Now we wait.”

The voice hesitated.

“Are you sure this is necessary?”

Her smile vanished.

“Do you want your money or not?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

“Then stop questioning me.”

She ended the call.

Then she looked at the engagement ring on her finger.

The diamond reflected the light.

Beautiful.

Expensive.

Cold.

Just like the future she wanted.

That afternoon, Lily found something.

It happened completely by accident.

She was playing hide-and-seek with Rosa in the east hallway.

The two girls loved that hallway because nobody used it anymore.

There were old paintings.

Old furniture.

Old memories.

Rosa hid behind a large wooden cabinet.

Lily counted.

“One…”

“Two…”

“Three…”

When she opened her eyes, Rosa was gone.

“Rosa?”

The little girl giggled.

Lily followed the sound.

Behind the cabinet was a small opening.

A hidden space.

Rosa crawled out.

“Look!”

Inside was an old storage area.

Dusty boxes.

Old photographs.

Forgotten things.

Lily picked up a small wooden box.

She opened it.

Inside were papers.

She couldn’t read.

But one thing caught her attention.

A photograph.

A woman.

A younger Vanessa.

Standing beside someone.

A man Dominic had never seen.

And behind the photo was handwriting.

Only a few words.

But enough.

Enough to change everything.

Lily carried the photograph.

She didn’t know why.

She only knew it felt important.

She ran.

Straight downstairs.

Straight toward Dominic.

Dominic was in his office when the door suddenly opened.

“Daddy!”

He looked up.

Lily ran inside.

Behind her was Rosa.

“Slow down.”

He smiled slightly.

“What happened?”

Lily climbed onto his chair.

She held out the photograph.

“Vanessa.”

Dominic took it.

At first, he didn’t understand.

Then he saw.

His entire expression changed.

Because the man standing beside Vanessa in the picture…

Was someone Dominic knew.

Or rather…

Someone he thought he knew.

His business partner.

The man who had disappeared three years ago after a financial scandal.

The man who had almost destroyed Whitmore Technologies.

The man who had a reason to hate Dominic.

Dominic turned the photograph over.

The handwriting on the back was clear.

A date.

A location.

And one sentence:

“When Dominic finds out the truth, everything falls apart.”

His blood ran cold.

Because suddenly, the photograph of Elena didn’t matter.

The accusations didn’t matter.

The floor.

The kitchen.

The lies.

They were all pieces of something much bigger.

Vanessa wasn’t just a cruel woman trying to control his household.

She had entered his life with a purpose.

A hidden purpose.

That evening, Dominic confronted Vanessa.

She was waiting in the living room.

Still beautiful.

Still calm.

Still pretending.

Until she saw the photograph in his hand.

The color drained from her face.

Just for a second.

But Dominic saw it.

And that was enough.

“Where did you get this?”

Her voice was different.

“What is that?”

“Don’t lie to me.”

The words were quiet.

But dangerous.

Vanessa stared at him.

For the first time…

She looked like someone who had lost control.

“Dominic…”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“I gave you every chance to tell me the truth.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“You’re choosing a maid over me?”

The question revealed everything.

Because it wasn’t about innocence.

It was about loyalty.

Dominic looked at her.

And realized something painful.

He had not fallen in love with Vanessa.

He had fallen in love with the person she pretended to be.

“I’m choosing the truth.”

Those four words destroyed the room.

Vanessa’s face hardened.

And then she smiled.

A cold smile.

“Fine.”

She stepped back.

“You want the truth?”

Dominic waited.

“Then prepare yourself.”

She looked toward the stairs.

Toward where Lily slept.

“Because the truth will hurt everyone.”

And for the first time…

May you like

Dominic Whitmore wondered if the woman he planned to marry…

Had never loved him at all.
