Chapter 6 - PURGING THE POISON

While Walter was being processed at the federal detention center in St. Paul, Samuel and I returned to the luxury condo building in Minneapolis to handle the second painful chapter of our family's cleansing.

Chloe was sitting on the sofa in the living room, surrounded by half-packed cardboard boxes.

When Samuel and I entered the apartment, she stood up quickly, wiping her eyes, looking terrified and deeply ashamed.

"Samuel..." Chloe whimpered, taking a step toward him. "Please... can we just talk alone?"

Samuel stood tall, his expression unreadable, his arms folded across his chest. "There's nothing left to talk about privately, Chloe. Everything you did is on paper."

I walked over to the dining table, setting down a blue folder containing the formal divorce petition drafted by Julian Vance, along with a civil lawsuit for breach of fiduciary duty and fraud.

"What is this?" Chloe whispered, her voice trembling as she looked at the papers.

"It's a complete forfeiture agreement, Chloe," I told her firmly. "In exchange for Samuel agreeing not to name you as a co-conspirator in the federal fraud report regarding Walter's offshore Cayman payments, you will sign over all rights to this condo, waive all spousal support claims, and return the two hundred thousand dollars Walter paid you into an escrow account for Samuel's firm."

Chloe gasped, clutching her chest. "Two hundred thousand dollars?! I don't have that money anymore! I used it to pay off my student loans and buy my yoga studio equity!"

"Then you will sell your studio equity, Chloe," Samuel said, stepping forward, his voice completely devoid of the warmth he had once shown her. "You took money from my father to let him betray my mother in our bed. You lied to my face for two years while I worked eighty hours a week to build a future for us. You are going to give back every single cent, or I will let Agent Harris add your name to the federal indictment by noon today."

Chloe stared at Samuel, realizing for the first time that the gentle, trusting husband she had exploited was gone forever. In his place stood a man who would no longer tolerate poison in his life.

Tears streamed down her cheeks as she picked up the pen from the table and signed every single page of the forfeiture agreement.

"Get your things and leave," Samuel said quietly, pointing toward the door. "If I ever see you near my office, my mother, or my home again, I will enforce the civil judgment to its maximum extent."

Chloe grabbed her purse, pulled her coat over her shoulders, and walked out of the apartment without looking back once.

As the front door clicked shut behind her, the apartment suddenly felt lighter, as if a toxic cloud that had hovered over the space for years had finally dissipated into the thin air.

Samuel walked over to the large floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Minneapolis skyline. He let out a long, deep breath—the breath of a man who was finally, truly free.

"Thank you, Mom," Samuel whispered, turning to look at me with tears of profound gratitude in his eyes.

I walked over, wrapped my arms around my son, and held him tight. "We did it, Sammy. Together."
