Chapter 7 - The Midnight Strategy

By 2:00 a.m., the living room of Ethan’s penthouse had been converted into a war room.

Three top litigators from Carter Industries’ legal team sat at the grand dining table, their laptops glowing in the ambient light. Alongside them was Dr. Elena Rostova, the former head of ethics at Johns Hopkins, whom Ethan had flown in on his private jet two hours earlier.

Ava sat at the center of the table, dressed in one of Ethan’s oversized cashmere sweaters and dark trousers, a warm cup of tea resting between her hands.

For the first time in months, she wasn't hiding. She wasn't covering up bruises or rehearsing lies to tell her friends. She sat surrounded by some of the sharpest minds in the country, detailing every incident of abuse, every financial irregularity she had stumbled across in Andrew’s office, and every threat he had made against her.

"The physical evidence is strong," Lord Thomas, Ethan’s lead litigator, said, tapping his pen against a legal pad. "We have the medical imaging from the private clinic where Ava secretly got her ribs X-rayed last month. We have the audio files captured by her smart home system. But Andrew’s defense team will argue that these were domestic disputes—a 'he-said, she-said' nightmare that will drag through civil court for years while he continues to practice medicine."

"We aren't taking him to civil court, Thomas," Ethan said, standing near the glass window, looking out over the sleeping city. "We’re filing an emergency injunction with the New York State Supreme Court at 6:00 a.m. to suspend his medical license immediately, pending criminal indictment."

"On what primary ground?" Dr. Rostova asked, raising her eyebrow. "The abuse charges, while horrific, will take time for the District Attorney to process."

"On the ground of immediate public danger," Ava spoke up.

The entire room turned to look at her.

Ava’s voice didn't tremble. She sat up straight, setting her teacup down on the saucer with a crisp, decisive click.

"At 8:00 a.m. tomorrow," Ava said, her eyes burning with fierce determination, "Dr. Vaughn is scheduled to perform a complex arterial reconstruction on four-year-old Lily Chen. I managed his schedule. I know his surgical logs. Three days ago, Andrew ordered twelve milligrams of diazepam from his private prescription pad—a dosage he uses off-label to suppress the tremors in his right hand before long procedures."

Dr. Rostova gasped. "He's operating under the influence of motor-control suppressants?!"

"Yes," Ava said. "I have the pharmacy delivery receipts saved in my encrypted drive. If he steps into that operating theater tomorrow morning, that little girl could die on his table."

Ethan walked over to the table, resting his hands on the back of Ava’s chair. The proximity of his presence brought a sudden, comforting warmth to her cold shoulders.

"Thomas," Ethan commanded smoothly. "Draft the emergency injunction. Route it directly to Judge Abernathy’s home office. He owes my family a favor, and he doesn't tolerate medical malpractice."

"Consider it done, Mr. Carter," Thomas said, his fingers flying across his keyboard.

"And what about the media?" Ava asked, looking up at Ethan. "Andrew’s PR firm is already putting out press releases claiming I left him due to a 'mental health crisis'."

Ethan looked down at her, a tiny, rare smile touching the corners of his hard lips—a smile filled with fierce pride and something much deeper.

"Tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m.," Ethan said softly, "you and I are holding a live press conference in the lobby of Carter Tower."

Ava’s breath hitched. "A... a press conference?"

"Only if you're ready," Ethan added quickly, his voice dropping into a tender, gentle tone meant only for her. "You don't have to face them if you don't want to, Ava. I can handle the press alone. I can destroy him without you ever standing under those lights again."

Ava looked at Ethan. She saw the fierce protection in his eyes, but she also saw the deep respect he held for her strength. He wasn't trying to hide her away in a golden cage like Andrew had. He was offering her the weapon to fight her own battle.

She reached out, her small hand resting over Ethan’s hand on the back of the chair.

"No," Ava said firmly, a brilliant, beautiful resolve settling into her chest. "I’m done hiding in the shadows, Ethan. Tomorrow morning... I tell the world the truth."
