Chapter 2 - SHADOWS OF THE MC

The motorcycle roared down the deserted state highway, a streak of chrome and black leather against the barren desert landscape. Leo was tucked tightly in front of Jax, his small hands gripping the handlebars just inside of Jax’s massive arms. The wind whipped through their hair, carrying the scent of gasoline and impending rain. Jax kept his speed steady, his eyes scanning the horizon and the rearview mirrors. He knew this territory better than anyone, and right now, every shadow looked like an ambush.
He pulled the bike into a hidden gravel driveway obscured by overgrown mesquite bushes. At the end of the path sat a derelict warehouse—the original clubhouse of the Grim Bastards before they moved their operations closer to the city. It was supposed to be empty, a ghost town of concrete and rusted chains.
Jax cut the engine. The sudden silence was deafening, broken only by the ticking of the hot exhaust pipe.
"We stay quiet here," Jax murmured, lifting Leo off the bike with ease. "This is where I used to work. It’s safe for now, but we don't stay long."
He pushed open the heavy steel side door, guiding Leo into the dim, cavernous interior. Dust motes danced in the solitary shafts of light piercing through the cracked skylights. In the center of the room sat a massive oak table, its surface scarred by decades of knife gouges and spilled liquor. This was the table where life-and-death decisions had been made.
"Sit here," Jax said, pulling out a heavy steel chair for the boy.
Leo sat down, looking around the intimidating space with wide, curious eyes. "Is this where you live?"
"No. I live on the road," Jax replied, walking over to a rusted locker in the corner. He pulled a hidden lever inside, and a false back panel clicked open. Inside were three assault rifles, several handguns, and boxes of ammunition. The tools of his trade. He began checking the chamber of a black Glock 19, his movements mechanical and precise.
"Why did you leave us?" Leo’s question was quiet, but it hit Jax harder than any bullet ever could.
Jax froze, his thumb resting on the slide of the gun. He closed his eyes, taking a slow, ragged breath before turning to face his son. He walked back to the table and sat opposite the boy, looking at the innocent face that deserved a better father than a broken outlaw.
"Your mom... she was too good for this world, Leo," Jax said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. "The life I live... it’s full of bad people. People who hurt things just because they can. I thought if I stayed away, the danger wouldn't find her. I thought I was protecting both of you by being a ghost." He looked down at his tattooed hands. "I was wrong. My past followed her anyway."
"Who are the Iron Skulls?" Leo asked, remembering the patch he had seen on the jackets of the men who dragged his mother away.
Jax’s jaw clenched so hard the muscles jumped. The Iron Skulls were a ruthless, cartel-backed faction that had been trying to move into Grim Bastards territory for months. They didn't care about the unwritten laws of the road. They dealt in human trafficking and heavy narcotics, led by a sadistic psychopath named Marcus "The Butcher" Vance.
"They are bad men who think they can take whatever they want," Jax said, his eyes darkening. "But they made a mistake. They took something that belongs to me."
Before Leo could answer, the heavy steel door of the warehouse creaked open. The sharp click of a gun being cocked echoed through the empty space.
"Step away from the kid, Jax," a voice shouted from the shadows of the entrance.
Jax didn't panic. He slowly raised his hands, keeping his body positioned firmly between the doorway and Leo. Out of the darkness stepped Chibs, a grizzled, older member of the Grim Bastards, his face lined with old battle scars, a shotgun leveled directly at Jax’s chest.
"Chibs," Jax said calmly, not moving a muscle. "Put the gun down. It’s me."
Chibs lowered the weapon slightly, his brow furrowing in confusion as he looked from Jax to the young boy sitting at the table. "Jax? What the hell are you doing here? The club thought you went rogue. Word on the street is the Iron Skulls are looking for you, saying you stole something from them."
"I didn't steal anything," Jax said, his voice dripping with venom. "They took Clara. And this is my son."
Chibs froze, his eyes widening as he looked at Leo, seeing the unmistakable family resemblance. The shotgun barrel dipped completely toward the floor. "Holy mother of God... Jax. You have a boy?"
"I do. And right now, Marcus has his mother," Jax said, stepping forward, his hands dropping to his sides. "I need the club, Chibs. I need the brothers. If the Iron Skulls want a war, I’m going to bring them one they won't survive."
Chibs looked at the boy, then back at Jax, a fierce, protective loyalty igniting in his old eyes. He slammed his fist against his chest, right over his club patch. "Then let's go get the boys. No one touches a brother's blood."
