Chapter 4 - The Lion's Den

On Monday morning, the glass-and-steel skyscraper housing Vanguard Holdings in downtown Minneapolis stood like an icy needle against the winter sky.

Inside the sprawling top-floor executive suite, Julian Vanguard—a fifty-year-old man with slicked-back blonde hair, sharp teeth, and a multi-thousand-dollar tailored suit—sat behind his obsidian desk, screaming into his phone.

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN CALLOWAY HAS HER?!" Julian roared, slamming his leather-bound notebook onto the desk. "She was a dying homeless woman in an alley! How the hell did Weston Calloway get involved?!"

Standing across from the desk was his lead corporate fixer, a cold, predatory attorney named Richard Sterling.

"Calloway was attending the Saint Adelbert charity drive," Sterling explained nervously, adjusting his tie. "He found her behind the church. He used his personal medical team to pay for her ICU care, and his legal chief, Arthur Vance, filed a temporary private guardianship petition for the kid."

Julian stood up, pacing back and forth in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.

"If Maren Ellery gets in front of a federal grand jury with Calloway’s backing, those audit files she hid are going to destroy us!" Julian snarled, his face twisting with rage. "The riverfront contract is being awarded by the city council in three weeks! If Calloway exposes the forty-million-dollar deficit, I won't just lose the contract—I'll go to federal prison!"

"What do you want to do, Julian?" Sterling asked grimly. "Calloway isn't some low-level clerk you can intimidate. He has more liquid capital than we do, and his reputation in this city is untouchable."

Julian’s eyes narrowed into dark, venomous slits. He picked up his pen, clicking it repeatedly.

"Every man has a weakness," Julian whispered. "Weston Calloway has lived like a monk in that river house for twenty years since his wife died. He doesn't take risks. He doesn't make emotional mistakes. But now he's brought a homeless woman and a six-year-old child into his house."

Julian leaned across the desk, a sickening, predatory grin spreading across his face.

"Call the county child welfare director," Julian commanded. "Tell him I want a full-scale parental unfitness hearing scheduled for Thursday morning. Issue a formal subpoena for Clara Ellery's psychological evaluation. And hire a private investigation firm to dig up every piece of dirt on Maren's deceased family. If we can't break Calloway, we will make that little girl's life such a living nightmare that Maren will hand over the audit files just to save her child."

"And if Calloway refuses to comply with the court order?" Sterling asked.

"Then Calloway goes down with her," Julian spat. "I'll burn his company to the ground before I let him take my riverfront project."
