Chapter 6 - The Blood and the Stone

The fight was short, brutal, and absolute. Dominic moved through the kitchen with the terrifying efficiency of a predator that had hunted in these shadows for decades. The two remaining gunmen who had entered the basement were eliminated before they could even level their sights.

When the silence returned, the kitchen smelled of gunpowder, ozone, and copper.

Dominic dropped the empty shotgun onto the floor, its metal frame clattering against the tiles. He didn't look at the bodies. He ran directly to Clara, who was semi-conscious on the floor, her face bruised and blood dripping from her lip.

"Clara," Dominic said, his hands—usually so cold and controlled—trembling as he lifted her head from the concrete. "Where is he? Where is Noah?"

Clara pointed a weak, shaking finger toward the iron sink. "Behind... the blue barrels. He's safe. He didn't... he didn't make a sound."

Dominic turned toward the sink. Before he could reach it, a small figure crawled out from behind the industrial detergent.

Noah’s clothes were covered in gray dust, his face smudged with soot. He looked at the bodies on the floor, then at his father’s blood-stained shirt. For a second, the old terror flared in his eyes—the memory of the highway ambush that had taken his mother.

But then he looked at Clara, who was trying to smile at him despite the blood on her face.

Noah walked past his father. He didn't run to Dominic. He walked directly to Clara, knelt beside her on the dirty kitchen floor, and took her hand in his small, wax-stained fingers.

"Clara," he said again. The voice was stronger this time, a solid, beautiful sound that echoed through the ruined kitchen. "Clara, up."

Dominic froze. He stayed on his knees, staring at his son—the son who hadn't spoken his name, who hadn't uttered a syllable in two agonizing years. The boy was speaking. He was comforting someone else. He was anchoring himself to reality.

Tears, thick and unbidden, welled in the eyes of the most feared man in Chicago. Dominic reached out, his large arm wrapping around both Clara and Noah, pulling them into a tight, fierce embrace against his chest.

"I’ve got you," Dominic whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion he hadn't felt since the day his wife died. "I’ve got both of you. The house is clean. The storm is over."

Outside, the sirens of the Chicago police department were finally wailing in the distance, but inside the basement of the Lake Forest estate, the silence had finally been broken.
