Chapter 5 - The Eviction

While Claire was taking command of the corporate empire in downtown Boston, Ethan Caldwell was suffering a complete breakdown in his multi-million-dollar Beacon Hill brownstone.

The grand historic townhouse, featuring marble fireplaces, hand-carved mahogany staircases, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Boston Common, was in total disarray.

Ethan was pacing back and forth across the Persian rug in his study, holding a glass of scotch in one trembling hand and his phone in the other.

"What do you mean my card is declined?" Ethan screamed into the receiver. "I am the CEO of Caldwell Meridian! Re-activate the corporate credit line immediately!"

"I'm sorry, Mr. Caldwell," the voice of a senior bank manager replied coolly over the speaker. "We have received a formal court order signed by Judge Miriam Cross, along with an official corporate directive from the board of directors. All accounts associated with your name have been placed under an administrative hold pending the forensic audit."

"You can't do this! I will sue your entire bank!" Ethan roared.

The manager hung up.

Ethan threw his crystal scotch glass against the marble fireplace, shattering it into a hundred glittering pieces.

Vanessa Reed stood in the doorway of the study, wearing her silk robe, packing two large designer suitcases that sat in the hallway.

"Vanessa!" Ethan snapped, turning on her. "What are you doing?"

"I'm going to my mother's house in Nantucket, Ethan," Vanessa said coldly, zipping up her leather bag. "My father called me thirty minutes ago. He told me that if I'm seen with you right now, my trust fund will be frozen."

"You're leaving me?" Ethan asked, incredulous. "After everything I bought you? The car? The jewelry?"

"The car was leased through Caldwell Meridian, Ethan," Vanessa sneered, looking at him with open disgust. "And three process servers just pulled up to the front gate. Your world is ending, and I am not going to be collateral damage."

Before Ethan could respond, the front doorbell rang—a loud, demanding double chime that echoed through the high-ceilinged home.

Ethan marched down the grand staircase, throwing the heavy front door open, ready to unleash his fury on whatever process server was standing outside.

Instead, he froze.

Standing on his front stoop were two uniformed Suffolk County Sheriff's deputies, flanked by a man in a crisp gray suit holding a clipboard, and Julian Mercer.

Behind them, parked at the curb, was a large commercial moving truck.

"What is the meaning of this?" Ethan demanded, his voice cracking with desperation.

The sheriff's deputy stepped forward, holding a legal document. "Ethan Caldwell?"

"Yes!"

"I am serving you with an expedited Order of Possession issued by the Suffolk County Family and Probate Court," the deputy stated calmly. "This property, located at 142 Chestnut Street, was purchased in 2021 using funds derived directly from the Carrington Protocol royalty escrow accounts."

Julian Mercer stepped forward, his expression cold and professional.

"In short, Mr. Caldwell," Mercer said, "this brownstone belongs to the Carrington Trust, of which Claire Bennett is the sole trustee. Under the terms of Judge Cross's emergency order, you have precisely thirty minutes to vacate the premises."

"Thirty minutes?" Ethan shrieked. "This is my home! You can't throw me out on the street like a dog!"

"You have thirty minutes to collect your personal clothing and legal documents," the deputy repeated, stepping forward and placing his hand firmly on his leather holster. "If you refuse to cooperate, you will be placed under arrest for civil contempt and criminal trespassing."

Vanessa pushed past Ethan, carrying her two suitcases, walked past the deputies without looking back, and got into a waiting Uber.

Ethan stood on the threshold of his grand home, totally abandoned, watching his girlfriend drive away as the movers began unloading wooden crates onto his pristine front lawn.

For five years, he had threatened to make Claire homeless. He had forced her to pack her bags in the middle of the night, dragged her through cheap apartments, and bragged about how easily he could erase her from existence.

Now, standing in the doorway of his vanishing life, Ethan Caldwell finally understood what it felt like to be erased.
