Chapter 10 - The Real Birthday

The following Saturday, the lake house was filled with music, laughter, and the mouth-watering scent of fresh charcoal barbecue.

We didn't invite my father. We didn't invite Marcus, Brenda, or Chloe.

Instead, the lawn was filled with people who actually loved us. Sarah's parents were sitting by the fire pit, laughing with our neighbors. Leo’s occupational therapist and her family were enjoying drinks on the porch. Three kids from Leo's special education class were running around the grass, playing a roaring game of superhero tag.

At 4:00 PM, I brought out the cake.

It wasn't ordered from a high-end commercial bakery, nor did it cost $300. Sarah and I had spent four hours making it together in the lake house kitchen the night before. It was a double-layered chocolate cake covered in bright blue frosting, topped with a detailed, hand-molded Spider-Man figure striking a dramatic pose in the center.

As I placed the cake down on the outdoor table, the entire crowd gathered around, breaking into a loud, joyous chorus of "Happy Birthday."

Leo stood right in front of the cake. His eyes were bright, his smile stretched from ear to ear, and his small hands clapped in perfect, uninhibited rhythm with the song.

When the song ended, Leo blew out his six candles with one giant, determined breath.

The crowd cheered. Sarah hugged me around the waist, pressing a sweet kiss against my cheek.

Leo looked up at me, his deep brown eyes filled with pure, untainted happiness. He reached out his tiny hand, taking mine, and squeezed it tightly.

"Thank you, Daddy," Leo whispered softly over the sound of the cheering guests. "This is the best cake ever."

I knelt down in the soft green grass, wrapping my arms tightly around my son, holding him close against my chest as the summer wind blew softly through the trees over the lake.

The mud was gone. The toxic family was gone.

And in their place, we had built a fortress of absolute love, peace, and unshakeable happiness that no one would ever be allowed to break again.
