Chapter 5 - The CPS Investigation

At precisely nine o'clock the next morning, Agent Ramirez arrived. She was a middle-aged woman with tired eyes and a professional demeanor that gave nothing away. She carried a thick notepad and a tablet.

I sat with Talia at the dining room table while Agent Ramirez performed a thorough inspection of the nursery, the kitchen, the baby supplies, and our master bedroom. She checked for working smoke detectors, adequate formula supplies, clean crib sheets, and proper heating.

When she finished her walkthrough, she sat down across from us.

"Your home is clearly well-equipped and safe," Ramirez began, opening her notepad. "However, the report filed yesterday made specific allegations regarding Mrs. Talia's mental stability, including documented instances of severe memory loss, paranoia, and inability to care for the child without supervision."

I opened the blue binder I had placed on the table, along with a printed binder of our own prepared by Sarah Jenkins.

"Agent Ramirez," I said, "this is the binder my mother compiled while secretly harassing my wife. And these are the printouts of emails she forged using my identity to make it appear as though I supported her claims."

I laid down the security log from the home alarm company. "This shows the exact minute my mother manually changed the door lock administrator code, trapping Talia outside. And here is the official medical discharge summary from Tacoma General Hospital."

Ramirez spent twenty minutes reviewing the documents. As she read through the discharge papers detailing Talia’s infection and the police report detailing the incident on the porch, her expression changed from neutral professional interest to visible disgust.

"She locked a mother and an eighteen-day-old infant outside in November?" Ramirez asked, raising her eyebrows.

"Yes," Talia spoke up, her voice trembling slightly, but holding firm. "She told me I was weak. She told me I needed to 'toughen up' if I wanted to be a real mother. She took my phone, changed the codes, and when I tried to knock, she ignored me to entertain her church group."

Ramirez closed her folder with a quiet snap. "Mrs. Talia, I am so sorry you had to endure that. Based on what I have seen here, this report is not only unsubstantiated, but it appears to be a clear abuse of the child protective system intended to harass your family."

"Will there be an investigation against her?" I asked.

"I will be filing a formal report of a malicious false report with local law enforcement," Ramirez explained. "CPS takes the weaponization of our system very seriously. I am closing this case as unfounded immediately."

Relief washed over Talia like a wave, and she leaned her head against my shoulder. But as Agent Ramirez reached the front door, she turned to give us one final piece of advice.

"People who go to these lengths rarely give up just because one avenue closes," Ramirez warned softly. "Keep your doors locked, keep your attorney informed, and do not make contact with her under any circumstances."
