Chapter 9 - The Crimson Summit

The Midnight Bridge was an abandoned iron structure that spanned the grey, industrial waters of the Mystic River. It had been closed to traffic for twenty years, its rusted girders casting long, skeletal shadows across the dark water below. The rain was falling in sheets, a heavy northeastern storm that turned the city into a blur of neon and concrete.

Luca stood in the center of the bridge, his black overcoat soaked by the rain, his hands resting flat on the iron railing. Behind him sat three black armored SUVs, their engines idling with a low, rumbling growl, forty Ravellini soldiers standing watch in the darkness with automatic weapons raised.

At 3:00 a.m., a fleet of silver Mercedes sedans pulled up to the opposite side of the bridge.

Jimmy Chen stepped out of the lead car. He was younger than Luca, dressed in an expensive white silk jacket that looked completely ridiculous in the pouring rain, his blonde hair slicked back. The green dragon tattoo on his neck was fully visible beneath the yellow light of the single working streetlight. Beside him stood old Silvio, handcuffed and bleeding from a deep cut above his eye, his face a mask of absolute terror.

"You brought the book, Ravellini?" Jimmy Chen shouted across the gap, his voice carrying over the wind.

Luca reached into his overcoat and pulled out the blood-smeared leather ledger, holding it up into the rain. "I have the book, Chen. And I have the names of every politician you’ve been paying to look away from your docks. If this book reaches the federal prosecutor tomorrow morning, your family is finished."

"Then trade!" Chen screamed, shoving Silvio forward into the wet iron deck. "Give me the book, and I give you the traitor! We call a truce, we split the South End fifty-fifty, and the girl disappears from the witness list!"

Luca slowly walked forward, his leather boots clicking against the rusted metal of the bridge. He stopped five feet from Chen, his dark eyes entirely devoid of fear.

"There is no truce, Jimmy," Luca said softly. His voice didn't carry, but the absolute weight of his words made Chen’s smile vanish.

"You killed my captain. You targeted a fourteen-year-old girl under my protection, and you sent your rabid dogs into my private home in Rhode Island. A Ravellini does not negotiate with street dealers. I didn't come here to trade the book. I came here to show you what happens to people who forget who rules this city."

Luca threw the ledger over the side of the bridge.

The small leather book plummeted through the dark, disappearing into the black, rushing waters of the Mystic River below with a tiny splash.

Chen’s eyes went wide, his face turning an ugly, mottled red. "You crazy son of a bitch! You destroyed it!"

"The data was uploaded to the federal server two hours ago by my attorneys," Luca hissed, his silver revolver clearing his jacket before Chen’s men could even react.

He fired three times without stopping his stride. The first bullet caught the gunman beside Chen in the head. The second bullet tore through Jimmy Chen’s shoulder, the force of the impact spinning him around and throwing him against the iron railing. The third bullet caught old Silvio straight through the chest—a traitor’s price paid in full on the wet iron deck.

The bridge erupted into a full-scale military battle, the sound of automatic gunfire tearing through the storm as the Ravellini soldiers advanced, their barrels spitting fire into the darkness. Jimmy Chen scrambled over the railing, his white jacket stained with crimson as he tried to slide down the rusted iron supports toward his escape boat below, but Luca was faster.

Luca reached the railing, looking down at the bleeding syndicate boss who was hanging from a rusted beam forty feet above the black water.

"Please, Luca," Chen gasped, his fingers losing their grip on the slippery metal. "Please... we can make a deal—"

"The deal is closed," Luca said. He fired a single, final shot through the center of the green dragon tattoo on Chen’s neck. The man’s eyes rolled back, his body slipping from the beam and plunging down into the cold, unforgiving river below, his empire buried beneath the waves.
