CHAPTER 3 – THE WAR INSIDE THE RAVALINI EMPIRE

The first thing I noticed about Gabriel Ravalini when he became the man Chicago feared was that he stopped looking human.
Not because he changed.
Because he stopped pretending.
The gentle restraint disappeared.
The exhaustion in his eyes vanished.
The man who had apologized for sharing an Uber with me, who had covered my body with his own when bullets tore through the windshield, was gone.
In his place stood the man whose name was whispered in back rooms across the city.
The man criminals prayed they would never meet.
The Ravalini king.
And I was standing behind him, holding the camera that could destroy everything he had built.
The first gunshot echoed through the warehouse.
Gabriel didn't flinch.
"Left entrance," he ordered.
Three men moved instantly.
Not questioned.
Not hesitated.
Executed.
That was when I understood something terrifying.
Power wasn't about having weapons.
It wasn't about money.
It wasn't even about fear.
Power was when people trusted your decisions more than their own.
And everyone in that warehouse trusted Gabriel.
Except me.
Or at least...
I was trying not to.
"Stay here."
Gabriel turned toward me.
I almost laughed.
"Do you honestly think I'm going to hide behind a wall while armed men are breaking into the building?"
"Yes."
"That wasn't a question."
"It wasn't a suggestion."
I stared at him.
"You know, for a man who claims he doesn't want innocent people involved, you have a strange way of controlling everyone around you."
Something flashed in his eyes.
Pain.
Then it disappeared.
"This isn't a conversation we have time for."
"Convenient."
"Maya."
The way he said my name stopped me.
Not because it was commanding.
Because it sounded like a warning.
Not for me.
For himself.
Like he was afraid if he looked at me too long, he would forget there was a war happening.
"Promise me you won't leave this room."
I folded my arms.
"You don't get to give me orders."
A small, almost invisible smile appeared.
"You really don't fear me."
"No."
"Everyone fears me."
"I noticed."
"Then why don't you?"
I looked at the man standing in front of me.
The monster.
The protector.
The contradiction.
"Because monsters don't usually apologize before saving someone's life."
For one second, Gabriel Ravalini looked completely lost.
Then the building shook.
The moment disappeared.
The attack lasted nine minutes.
I counted.
Nine minutes of gunfire.
Nine minutes of shouting.
Nine minutes where I learned the difference between trained killers and desperate men.
Gabriel's people moved like a machine.
The attackers moved like they were afraid.
That told me everything.
The men outside weren't hunting.
They were running.
Running from someone.
Or something.
When the final shot ended, the silence was almost worse.
Gabriel walked back into the room.
His shirt was torn.
A cut marked his cheek.
But he was alive.
I hated how relieved I felt.
"You okay?"
The question came out before I could stop it.
His expression softened.
"I'm fine."
"You always say that."
"Because usually I am."
"You were shot at."
"Usually."
I rolled my eyes.
And somehow, in the middle of a mafia war, he almost smiled.
Almost.
Then Vincent entered.
His face was different.
Serious.
"We found him."
Gabriel's expression changed.
"Who?"
Vincent looked at me.
Then back at Gabriel.
"The traitor."
The room became colder.
"Name."
Vincent hesitated.
That was unusual.
Gabriel noticed.
"Vincent."
The older man finally spoke.
"Matteo."
For the first time since I met Gabriel, I saw something break.
Not anger.
Not surprise.
Betrayal.
"Matteo Bellini?"
Vincent nodded.
Gabriel turned away.
"No."
The word was quiet.
Almost a whisper.
"Impossible."
I watched him.
This wasn't a man discovering an enemy.
This was a man discovering someone he loved had chosen to hurt him.
"Who is Matteo?" I asked.
Nobody answered.
So I looked at Vincent.
"He was Gabriel's cousin."
The answer hit harder than I expected.
Family.
Again.
Always family.
Gabriel left before sunrise.
No explanation.
No goodbye.
Just disappeared into the darkness.
And somehow that bothered me more than if he had yelled.
I hated that.
I hated that I cared.
I had known him for less than twelve hours.
A dangerous criminal.
A man who lied to me.
A man surrounded by violence.
Yet I couldn't forget the way he shielded me.
The way he looked at the photograph of his dead brother.
The way he said my name.
Maya.
Like it mattered.
Like I mattered.
"You're making a mistake."
I turned.
Vincent stood in the doorway.
"Excuse me?"
"You should leave Chicago."
I frowned.
"Is that a threat?"
"No."
"Then what?"
"Advice."
I looked at him.
"You don't seem like the advice-giving type."
He ignored that.
"Gabriel protects what he considers his responsibility."
"I'm not his responsibility."
Vincent's expression was unreadable.
"That's what makes this dangerous."
"What?"
"He doesn't protect people."
A pause.
"He protects what he loves."
My heart skipped.
I looked away.
"He doesn't love me."
Vincent didn't respond.
Which was somehow worse.
Three hours later, I found out Gabriel Ravalini was not the only monster in Chicago.
His family was worse.
The Ravalini mansion sat on a hill overlooking the city.
A place that looked less like a home and more like a castle.
Black stone.
Iron gates.
Security everywhere.
I was brought there because Gabriel ordered it.
Again.
I should have been angry.
I was.
But I was also curious.
The camera was hidden in my jacket.
The memory card was hidden inside my necklace.
I had removed it before anyone could find it.
A habit from being a journalist.
Never trust anyone with your evidence.
Not even the man who saved your life.
The doors opened.
And I met the Ravalini family.
The first person I saw was a woman.
Beautiful.
Elegant.
Dangerous.
She looked around forty.
Dark hair.
Cold eyes.
She smiled.
But there was no warmth.
"So this is her."
I looked at Gabriel.
He stood beside me.
"Elena."
His voice changed.
Careful.
The woman smiled wider.
"I was wondering what kind of woman could make Gabriel break his own rules."
"I haven't broken anything."
"Oh, please."
She walked closer.
"You brought a civilian into the Ravalini estate."
Silence.
"You told Vincent she was under your protection."
More silence.
"You threatened your own men when they suggested removing her."
Gabriel's jaw tightened.
"Enough."
Elena looked at me.
"Do you know what you are, Maya?"
I didn't answer.
"A weakness."
The word was sharp.
But strangely...
I wasn't offended.
Because I realized something.
She wasn't insulting me.
She was warning me.
"You think you know Gabriel," Elena continued.
"You don't."
"Then tell me."
Everyone looked at me.
Even Gabriel.
I continued.
"Tell me who he really is."
Elena smiled.
"He's a man who spent his entire life becoming something he hated."
The room went silent.
"His father was cruel."
She looked at Gabriel.
"His grandfather was worse."
Gabriel looked away.
"He inherited an empire built on blood."
"And he kept it?"
Elena nodded.
"Because he thought if he controlled the darkness, he could stop it from hurting innocent people."
I looked at Gabriel.
"Is that true?"
He didn't answer.
Which was answer enough.
That night, Gabriel found me on the balcony.
Chicago stretched beneath us.
Beautiful.
Broken.
Like every city.
"You shouldn't listen to Elena."
"Why?"
"Because she knows too much."
"Is she wrong?"
He didn't answer.
I turned toward him.
"Your brother."
His expression changed.
"What about him?"
"You loved him."
"Yes."
"What happened?"
The wind moved between us.
For a long time, I thought he wouldn't answer.
Then:
"His name was Luca."
Gabriel leaned against the railing.
"He believed our family could change."
A bitter smile crossed his face.
"He believed people weren't born monsters."
I listened.
"Three years ago, Luca discovered someone inside the organization was selling information to our enemies."
"Matteo."
"Yes."
"And he tried to expose him."
Gabriel nodded.
"My brother trusted the wrong people."
The sadness in his voice was worse than anger.
"He went to a meeting."
"And?"
"He never came home."
I swallowed.
"What did you do?"
His eyes darkened.
"I burned every enemy involved."
The honesty shocked me.
"You killed them?"
"Yes."
No hesitation.
No apology.
Just truth.
"And now?"
"Now I'm trying to find the person who ordered Luca's death."
I looked at him.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I knew what you would do."
"What?"
"You would try to help."
I almost smiled.
"Maybe."
"You don't understand this world."
"No."
I stepped closer.
"But I understand people."
His eyes met mine.
"And I understand grief."
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Gabriel whispered:
"You should hate me."
"Maybe I should."
"But you don't."
"No."
"Why?"
I looked at the man everyone feared.
The man who carried an empire on his shoulders.
The man who saved a stranger during a storm.
"Because I think you're tired."
His expression changed.
"I'm not tired."
"You are."
"Maya."
"You've been fighting so long you forgot what peace feels like."
The silence afterward was different.
Not empty.
Dangerous.
Because something between us had changed.
Something neither of us wanted to admit.
Gabriel looked away first.
"Tomorrow, you leave."
My heart dropped.
"What?"
"You're going somewhere safe."
"You don't get to decide that."
"I do."
"No."
His eyes hardened.
"Maya."
I stepped closer.
"You saved my life."
"Yes."
"You dragged me into this."
"Yes."
"You don't get to send me away when things get difficult."
His voice lowered.
"I do if keeping you alive requires it."
"Why?"
The question escaped before I could stop it.
"Why do you care?"
Gabriel stared at me.
And for the first time...
The mafia king had no answer.
The next morning, the entire Ravalini empire changed forever.
Because Matteo Bellini wasn't just a traitor.
He was a doorway.
A doorway leading to something much bigger.
Vincent discovered bank transfers.
Hidden accounts.
Secret meetings.
And one name appearing everywhere.
Adrian Voss.
The man from my photographs.
The man who had watched my exhibition.
The man who knew exactly what Gabriel was hiding.
But there was one thing nobody expected.
One final piece of evidence.
A photograph from my camera.
A photograph I didn't remember taking.
A photograph that showed Adrian Voss standing beside someone.
Someone impossible.
Someone who should have been dead.
Gabriel's brother.
Luca Ravalini.
May you like
Alive.
And smiling.
