Chapter 8 - The Truth ExposedThe scandal broke across Chicago like a tidal wave.

The headlines were relentless: "The Cole Family Dynasty Built on a Lie," and "Prominent Philanthropist Arrested for Kidnapping Her Own Grandson." The medical board immediately stripped Margaret Cole of her administrative titles, and the hospital's board of trustees issued a formal public apology to Claire Marsh and her family, renaming the pediatric cardiac wing the Lily and Leo Cole Care Center.

But inside the quiet room on the fifth floor of the hospital, the noise of the world didn't matter.

The afternoon sun streamed through the window, casting a warm, golden light across the two beds that had been pushed close together.

Lily sat up against her pillows, a bright orange fish sticker prominently displayed on her forehead. Her color was beautiful—a healthy, vibrant pink that Claire had never seen in her daughter's face before. Beside her sat Leo, his tailored jacket gone, replaced by a comfortable set of hospital sweats. He was carefully showing her how to fold a piece of paper into a origami crane.

"You have to crease it down the middle first," Leo explained, his formal accent melting away into the easy rhythm of a child talking to his sister. "Otherwise, the wings won't fly straight."

"My wings fly straight now," Lily said, patting her chest where the small, neat surgical dressing was hidden beneath her pajamas. "Dr. Cole fixed the bird."

"He's not just Dr. Cole, Lily," Leo said softly, looking over at the doorway where Claire and Ethan were standing together. "He's our dad."

Lily turned her gray eyes toward Ethan. She considered this information for a long moment with her signature gravity.

"I knew that," Lily said finally, a brilliant, full laugh escaping her, bringing out the single left dimple that matched Ethan’s perfectly. "I told Mom he had a sad face because he was missing his other half. That was you, Leo."

Ethan stepped into the room, his arm wrapped around Claire’s waist, his heart fuller than it had ever been in his thirty-eight years of life. He walked over to the beds, leaning down to kiss Lily’s forehead right next to her orange fish sticker, before reaching out to pull Leo into a warm, strong embrace.

"Are you ready to go home?" Ethan asked them.

"Where is home?" Leo asked.

Claire walked over, taking her son's hand and locking her fingers with Ethan's across the children's beds.

"Home is wherever we are together, sweetie," Claire said, her voice filled with a peace she hadn't known in seven long years. "And we are never going to be apart again."
