Chapter 6 - The Docks of Pier 14

The storm had fully set in by six o'clock, whipping the dark waters of Massachusetts Bay into jagged, white-capped waves that slammed against the rotting wooden pilings of Pier 14.

Warehouse 9 was a massive, rusted corrugated-iron structure at the end of the pier, surrounded by shipping containers and stacked wooden pallets.

Inside, thirty senior members of the syndicate stood gathered around a long table set up in the center of the concrete floor. Dim industrial lamps hung from the steel rafters above, casting harsh, swaying shadows across the armed men standing in the darkness.

At the head of the table stood Julian Castellano.

He had discarded his raincoat, wearing his dark suit, raising a glass of scotch toward the gathered mob bosses, captains, and union leaders.

"For three years," Julian’s voice echoed off the metal walls, "we watched our syndicate wither under the rule of a man who sat in a wheelchair, hiding behind doctors and security guards while our territories were carved up by outsiders!"

A low murmur of agreement rippled through the older captains.

"Victor Castellano is dead!" Julian shouted, slamming his hand onto the table. "His heart finally gave out today! The old reign is over! Tonight, we consolidate the ports, we double the protection rates on the shipping lines, and we take back what belongs to the Castellano name!"

"And who voted you king, Julian?" a deep voice boomed from the back of the warehouse.

The entire room went completely silent.

Every guard, captain, and boss turned around toward the rusted double doors of the warehouse.

The rain was pouring down outside, framing a massive silhouette standing in the wide doorway.

The man walked slowly into the yellow light of the industrial lamps.

He wore a dark leather coat, his hair soaked with rain, his broad chest rising and falling with deep, powerful breaths. In his right hand, he carried a heavy iron crowbar, dripping with water and dark crimson blood.

Julian’s face went instantly, horribly white. His champagne glass slipped from his fingers, shattering onto the concrete floor.

"V-Victor?!" Julian choked out, his voice squeaking like a terrified child's. "No... no, it's impossible! You're dead! I saw the body! The doctor—"

"Your doctor was an idiot, Julian," Victor said, his deep voice carrying a terrifying, absolute thunder that shook the very rafters of the building.

He took three slow, deliberate steps forward. He wasn't in a wheelchair. He didn't limp. He moved with the terrifying, unstoppable force of a mountain coming down on a village.

"You thought I was broken," Victor said, his dark eyes locking onto his cousin's trembling form. "You thought I spent three years hiding in a chair because I was weak. I spent three years waiting for you to reveal every traitor in this room!"

Victor raised his left hand, pressing a button on a small black transmitter.

Outside the warehouse, heavy diesel engines roared to life. Four massive black tactical trucks smashed through the perimeter chain-link fences, blinding the men inside the warehouse with high-intensity floodlights. Dozens of federal agents and loyal Castellano soldiers poured out of the trucks, their assault rifles raised, sweeping into the building.

"Federal warrants!" a megaphone echoed from outside. "Drop your weapons! Put your hands on your heads!"

Panic erupted inside Warehouse 9.

Captains dropped their guns, throwing their hands into the air as tactical teams flooded the concrete floor. Julian’s private mercenaries tried to draw their weapons, but they were instantly tackled and pinned to the ground by federal officers.

Julian scrambled backward, pulling a small silver pistol from his belt, pointing it frantically at Victor’s chest.

"Stay back!" Julian screamed, his eyes wild with blind horror. "Stay back, you ghost! I'll kill you! I'll kill you again!"

Victor didn't even slow down. He walked straight through the flashing red and blue tactical lights, ignoring the gun pointed at his heart.

Before Julian could pull the trigger, Victor reached out, his bare left hand clamping around Julian’s wrist with the power of a hydraulic press.

Julian screamed as the bones in his wrist shattered under Victor’s grip. The silver pistol dropped to the floor, clattering against the concrete.

Victor grabbed Julian by the lapels of his suit, lifting his cousin six inches off the ground, pinning him violently against the corrugated iron wall of the warehouse.

"You killed my father," Victor whispered, his face inches from Julian’s terrifyingly pale face. "You targeted my family. And you tried to use an innocent girl to do your dirty work."

"Please, Victor!" Julian wept, blood leaking from his mouth. "Please! We're blood! We're family!"

"Family doesn't cut the brakes," Victor said softly.

He didn't kill him. Instead, Victor slammed Julian down onto the concrete at the feet of the lead FBI agent—Special Agent Vance, who stepped forward with silver handcuffs.

"Julian Castellano," Agent Vance announced, snapping the steel cuffs onto Julian’s broken wrists. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate fraud, tax evasion, and RICO violations."

As the federal agents dragged Julian and his remaining captains out into the rain, Victor turned around.

Standing near the open double doors, wrapped in a wet yellow raincoat, holding her small canvas bag, was me.
