Chapter 4 - The Surgical Lockout

A heavy, metallic thud reverberated through the operating room doors, followed by the muffled sound of shouting outside.

“Anna!” Aaron’s voice bounced off the heavy steel doors. “Stop this right now! Dr. Vance, you are committing an unsanctioned medical assault on my wife! Open these doors!”

Inside OR 4, nobody stopped.

Dr. Vance’s hands remained steady beneath the bright lights. She didn't even look up at the door. “Anesthesiologist, status on fetal heart rate?”

“Fetal heart rate is dropping,” the anesthesiologist called out, his voice tense. “It was 140. It just dipped to 110. The uterine manipulation is causing localized contractions.”

“We need that device out now,” Dr. Reed said, holding a pair of micro-surgical shears. “If the uterus contracts fully around those titanium barbs, it will tear the uterine wall wide open.”

Outside, another violent thud shook the doors. The thick safety glass window in the upper panel cracked, a web of white fractures spreading across the surface.

Through the shattered glass, I saw Aaron’s face.

His hair was disheveled, his blue tie pulled loose from his collar. Gone was the calm, polished Maternal Safety Specialist. His eyes were wide, wild, filled with an unhinged, desperate rage. Beside him, two county deputies were using a heavy metal battering ram from their patrol vehicle to force the door’s magnetic lock.

“Officer!” Dr. Vance yelled toward the intercom without taking her eyes off the surgical site. “This operating room is a sterile environment! Interruption of this procedure will result in immediate maternal and fetal death! If you breach that door, you are committing reckless endangerment!”

One of the deputies paused, looking through the cracked glass at the blood-stained surgical drapes and the monitors. “Sir,” the deputy said to Aaron, pulling back slightly. “She’s on the table. They’re mid-surgery.”

“She is not competent!” Aaron screamed, grabbing the deputy’s lapel. “They are destroying evidence of her self-harm! She inserted that device herself during a psychotic break!”

The sheer absurdity of his lie hung in the cold air.

I inserted a titanium-anchored micro-pump into my own uterine wall?

The audacity of his cover-up gave me a sudden, sharp jolt of crystal-clear clarity. He knew he was caught. He was throwing wild, impossible lies against the wall, hoping his status as a doctor would make people hesitate just long enough for him to gain control of the room.

“Dr. Vance,” I said, my voice cutting through the noise of the room. “Don't let him in.”

Dr. Vance glanced over the top of her surgical mask, her eyes meeting mine for a brief second. “He isn't coming through these doors, Anna. Not today.”

She looked back at the surgical site. “I have the primary clamp on the titanium housing. Natalie, cut the vascular supply line on the left pin.”

Snip.

A high-pitched tone sounded from the heart monitor. Beep... beep... beep...

“Fetal rate down to 95!” the anesthesiologist shouted. “We’re entering severe distress!”

“I need ten seconds!” Dr. Vance snapped. Her hands moved with terrifying speed and precision. She pulled back on the extraction clamp. A soft, wet release sounded beneath the drapes.

“Primary pin disengaged,” Dr. Reed announced. “Second pin disengaged.”

With a smooth, upward motion, Dr. Vance lifted the dark metallic cylinder out of my body.

It was roughly three inches long, made of polished matte silver titanium, gleaming under the surgical lights. A small digital LED light on its side was pulsing a slow, steady yellow. Attached to its tip was a clear plastic fluid micro-chamber half-filled with a cloudy, yellowish liquid.

“Camille! Evidence container!” Dr. Vance commanded.

Camille stepped forward holding a heavy glass specimen jar filled with formal preservative fluid. Dr. Vance dropped the titanium device inside. It hit the bottom with a hard clink.

Camille immediately snapped the lid shut, wrapped a red tamper-evident security seal around the threads, and began writing the timestamp on the label.

DATE: AUGUST 5, 2026 TIME: 11:42 A.M. CONTENTS: UNREGISTERED IMPLANTED MICRO-INFUSION RESERVOIR

The moment the device was isolated, the continuous high-pitched alarm on the fetal monitor softened.

Beep... beep... beep...

“Heart rate stabilizing!” the anesthesiologist reported, a massive sigh of relief escaping his chest. “120... 135... 142! It’s climbing back to normal!”

Outside, the heavy steel doors finally gave way with a loud metallic crash.

Aaron burst into the room, flanked by the two deputies. His eyes locked onto the glass specimen jar in Camille’s hands.

“Drop that!” Aaron roared, lunging across the sterile perimeter toward Camille. “That is proprietary medical equipment from St. Catherine’s! It belongs to my clinic!”

Before he could touch her, Sergeant Miller and two County General security officers stepped out from the side storage room, their sidearms drawn and aimed directly at Aaron’s chest.

“Step back, Dr. Mitchell!” Sergeant Miller ordered in a voice like thunder. “Step away from the medical team!”

Aaron stopped mid-stride. His chest was heaving, his face slick with sweat. He looked at the deputies he had brought with him, then at the glass jar, then down at me lying on the surgical table.

I pulled the plastic curtain down slightly with my left hand, looking him straight in his eyes.

“It’s over, Aaron,” I said softly.

He stared at me, his lip trembling, the carefully constructed facade of the brilliant, loving physician completely shattering into dust.

“Anna...” he whispered, trying to soften his voice back into that gentle, persuasive tone he had used for years. “You don't understand... I was doing it for us. The baby... he needed to be protected...”

“Take him out,” Dr. Vance said coldly, pointing her gloved finger toward the broken door. “Take him out of my operating room before I have him arrested for armed medical intrusion.”

The two county deputies looked at each other, then at the glass specimen jar with the red evidence seal, and finally at Aaron.

The deputy who had held the battering ram stepped behind Aaron, grabbed his arms, and snapped a pair of steel handcuffs around his wrists.

“Dr. Aaron Mitchell,” the officer said, reading him his rights as they dragged him backward through the shattered doors. “You are under arrest for felony medical assault, illegal human experimentation, and tampering with evidence.”
