CHAPTER 2 — “The Call That Broke the Silence”

The yellow emergency light on the kitchen phone blinked once.

Then everything in Vale House stopped breathing.

Rosie’s voice was small, trembling—too small for the storm it would trigger.

“Mr. A… Miss Celeste is hurting Mommy.”

For exactly three seconds, nothing happened.

Then the security system changed tone.

Not the house alarms.

Not the staff radios.

But the private line—the one connected directly to Adrian Vale.

Celeste laughed softly, still pressing my wrist into the marble.

“Let her play,” she said. “Adrian is in Singapore. Even if she called, no one—”

The front doors opened.

Not slowly.

Not ceremonially.

They slammed against the marble walls with a force that silenced the entire estate.

Wind rushed in.

And with it, Adrian Vale.

He didn’t look like a man returning home.

He looked like a system that had just detected corruption.

Behind him came two lawyers. One forensic investigator. And the head of Vale Security.

Celeste finally let go of my wrist.

Not because she wanted to.

Because the room itself changed temperature.

“Adrian,” she said quickly, adjusting her posture. “This is ridiculous. Your staff is out of control—”

He didn’t look at her.

He looked at me.

At my soaked clothes.

At the red marks on my wrist.

At Rosie standing barefoot on the chair still holding the phone like it was a lifeline.

Then he spoke.

Quietly.

Dangerously.

“I heard everything.”

Celeste blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Then she laughed.

A short, sharp sound. “You heard a child’s misunderstanding. She’s attached to the maid, it’s normal—”

One of the lawyers stepped forward and placed a tablet on the kitchen island.

The screen was already recording.

Audio active.

Time-stamped.

Every word Celeste had spoken played back through the room.

“Say thank you.”

“On your knees.”

“Women like you should be grateful.”

The sound filled the silence like broken glass.

Celeste’s smile faltered—but only slightly.

“I can explain—”

Adrian raised a hand.

Not to stop her.

To signal the security team.

“Check her account transfers,” he said.

“Check the charity foundation ledger.”

“Check the internal cameras from the last ninety days.”

Celeste’s face shifted.

For the first time, she didn’t look amused.

She looked… calculated.

“You’re doing this because of her?” she said, nodding at me. “A maid?”

Adrian finally turned to her.

And what he said next changed everything.

“No,” he said.

“I’m doing this because she used my house to commit fraud.”

The investigator stepped forward.

“Miss Vane,” he said, “we’ve already traced four unauthorized transfers from the Vale Foundation to offshore accounts under your advisory control.”

Silence dropped.

Heavy.

Final.

Celeste took a step back.

“That’s impossible,” she whispered.

But her voice didn’t sound confident anymore.

It sounded trapped.

And behind her, Rosie quietly got down from the chair.

May you like

Walked to me.

And held my hand.
