Chapter 7 - The Vulnerability of Kings

The corporate disclosures Dante needed were not legal documents; they were financial authorization forms that allowed Moretti Holdings to buy out the outstanding debt of Vanessa’s late husband from the Lucchesi sportsbook.
"Why are you doing this?" Vanessa asked, sitting in a large leather chair opposite his desk, a cup of hot chamomile tea between her hands. The warmth of the study was beginning to thaw the ice in her veins. "You don't know me. You're... you're who the papers say you are. Why care about a second-grade teacher’s problems?"
Dante sat behind his desk, his sleeves rolled up, revealing the powerful forearms and a faded tattoo of a lion near his wrist. He looked down at the pink unicorn backpack that was now sitting on his filing cabinet.
"Four years ago, my wife, Isabella, died of leukemia," Dante said, his voice dropping into a quiet, gravelly register that sounded like old stones grinding together. "During her last three months, I spent fifty million dollars buying experimental pharmaceuticals, flying in specialists from Tokyo, and hiring the best medical teams in the world."
He looked up, his gray eyes locking onto hers with a profound, raw honesty.
"But with all my power, all my money, and all the men I control, I couldn't stop her lungs from filling with fluid at 3:00 in the morning. I sat on the floor of her hospital room and watched her die while my son slept in a plastic chair."
Dante leaned forward, his hands flat on the desk. "I learned then that the world is full of monsters you can't shoot, Ms. Turner. But Ryan Foster? His uncle? The Lucchesis? Those are monsters I can shoot. Those are problems I can solve with money and steel. Your daughter asked for a miracle. I am simply delivering the inventory."
Vanessa felt a profound ache in her chest—not of fear, but of an overwhelming, intense empathy for the lonely king sitting across from her. He wasn't a monster. He was a father who had been broken by the one thing he couldn't control, and he was using his scars to shield her from the same darkness.
"Thank you, Dante," she whispered, using his name for the first time.
A soft knock interrupted them. Marco walked in, his clothes damp from the sleet outside. He looked at Dante and nodded once—the signal that the first phase of the operation was complete.
"The Lucchesi brothers just accepted the wire transfer, Boss," Marco said, leaning against the doorframe. "Thomas Turner’s debt is legally cleared from their ledgers. They even threw in an apology for the inconvenience. As for Detective Foster..."
Marco’s smile turned into something sharp and dangerous. "He’s currently sitting in an interrogation room at the Internal Affairs bureau downtown. We dropped a copy of his extortion texts, along with a certified bank statement showing twenty thousand dollars of unexplained cash deposits into his private account, onto the PC’s desk an hour ago."

Vanessa let out a breathless gasp, her hand flying to her mouth. "He’s arrested?"
"Not yet," Dante said, standing up. "His uncle, the judge, is already moving to suppress the files. He thinks he can clear his nephew by morning. But they don't know that I’ve spent the last three hours buying the debt on the judge’s private townhousing development in Harlem. By 8:00 a.m., Judge Foster won't be worrying about his nephew. He’ll be worrying about bankruptcy."
