Chapter 9 - The Legacy

Six months later.
The summer sun streamed through the wide windows of the valley home Roman had bought for Hannah twenty miles outside the city—a quiet, private sanctuary surrounded by acres of green forest, blooming wildflower gardens, and a private lake.
There were no marble pillars, no dark family secrets, and no high-society pressure. Just peace.
Hannah sat on the wide wrap-around porch in a comfortable white linen dress, enjoying the warm breeze. Her lap held a thick binder of foundation reports, but her hands were currently resting over her stomach.
A soft bump had begun to show against her curves over the past two months.
The heavy sound of boots echoed on the wooden porch steps. Roman walked up, wearing a simple dark t-shirt and jeans, having just returned from a walk around the lake with their two large German Shepherds.
He set his gloves down on the porch table, walked directly to her chair, and knelt beside her.
Without saying a word, he placed his large, warm hand directly over her abdomen, pressing his forehead against her knee.
"How is he today?" Roman asked softly, his voice full of a tender reverence that still brought tears to Hannah’s eyes.
"She," Hannah corrected with a soft laugh, running her fingers through his dark hair. "The doctor said it’s eighty percent likely to be a girl."
Roman lifted his head, his dark eyes shining with intense, emotional light. "A girl."
"A girl," Hannah confirmed, smiling down at him. "Who will inherit her mother’s brains and her father’s terrifying temper."
"She will inherit her mother’s heart," Roman whispered, leaning up to press a soft, lingering kiss against Hannah’s lips, then shifting down to press another kiss directly against her bump. "That’s all she’ll ever need."
A black sedan pulled up the long gravel driveway.
Bianca Duca stepped out of the back seat, carrying a small, beautifully wrapped package tied with yellow silk ribbon. She walked up the porch steps slowly, offering a warm, genuine smile to both of them.
"Good afternoon, Roman. Hannah," Bianca said gently.
"Mother," Roman acknowledged, standing up and offering her a chair.
Bianca sat down, placing the small box on Hannah’s lap. "I brought something for the baby. It was Roman’s when he was born—a silver heirloom rattle passed down from my grandmother."
Hannah opened the box, touching the smooth, antique silver inside. "It’s beautiful, Bianca. Thank you."
Bianca looked at Hannah, her eyes soft with an affection that had taken months to grow, but was now unbreakable. "I spoke with the board this morning, Hannah. The new pediatric wing at the central hospital has been completed. They want to name it the Hannah Duca Children’s Wing."
Hannah looked up in surprise. "Bianca... you didn't have to do that."
"I wanted to," Bianca said firmly, taking Hannah’s hand in her own. "Because twenty-three members of my family almost lost everything because of my arrogance. And you saved us. You gave this family a future, Hannah. You gave my son a home."
Roman walked behind Hannah’s chair, wrapping his heavy arms around her shoulders, resting his chin on top of her head as they looked out over the quiet, sunlit lake.

The storms of the past were completely gone. The whispers, the suspicion, the elitist cruelty had all burned away in the fire of an unshakeable love.
Hannah leaned back into her husband’s solid, warm chest, feeling his heartbeat steady against her back, her hand resting over their growing child. She had stood her ground when the world tried to make her small, and in doing so, she had conquered an empire.
