Chapter 10 - The Unbreakable Vow

The day of our new wedding arrived, a crisp, beautiful autumn afternoon. We didn't choose a luxury vineyard or an exclusive country club. Instead, we were married on the beach at Fort Story, overlooking the powerful, eternal waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
The guest list was small, consisting only of the people who truly loved and supported us: my father, Elena, Colonel Walker, Matthew’s new colleagues from the public defender’s office, and a dozens of marines from my old unit.
The ceremony began. As the music played, I walked down the sandy aisle, my father holding my arm tightly. I wore the custom dress, the silver embroidery of the Bronze Star catching the brilliant afternoon sunlight. In my bouquet of white roses, pinned securely to the silk ribbon wrapping the stems, was my actual Bronze Star medal.
Matthew stood at the altar, wearing a sharp grey suit. When he looked at me, his eyes welled with tears, a smile spreading across his face that told me everything I ever needed to know about our future.
We stood before the military chaplain, the ocean breeze rustling the fabric of my dress.
When it came time for the vows, Matthew took my hands in his. He looked directly into my eyes, his voice clear and resonant over the sound of the crashing waves.
"Sarah," Matthew said, "I watched my family try to destroy you because they couldn't understand your strength. They tried to burn your dreams, but they only succeeded in showing me what true honor looks like. You are my anchor, my captain, and my hero. I promise to stand by you through every storm, to protect your honor as you have protected this country, and to love you unconditionally for the rest of my days."
I smiled, my heart overflowing. "Matthew, I’ve faced a lot of battles in my life, and I’ve known fear that words can't describe. But standing here with you, I’ve never felt safer. You gave up everything—wealth, status, security—to stand up for what was right, to stand up for me. You proved that honor isn't inherited; it’s chosen. I promise to love you, to fight for you, and to build a life with you that no fire can ever touch."
The chaplain smiled, raising his hands. "By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss your bride."

Matthew pulled me close, his lips meeting mine in a deep, passionate kiss as our guests erupted into thunderous applause and cheers. My father let out a loud Marine "Ooh-rah!" that made everyone laugh.
As we walked back down the aisle together, hand in hand, the sun began to set, painting the sky in brilliant hues of gold, orange, and purple. We had survived the fire, we had conquered the malice of the past, and out of the ashes, we had built an unbreakable love.
