CHAPTER 4 – THE WAR FOR THE BLACKWOOD LEGACY

Roman Blackwood had faced men who wanted him ruined.

He had faced competitors who spent years studying his weaknesses.

He had faced lawsuits designed to drain his company, scandals designed to destroy his reputation, and enemies who believed money gave them the right to challenge him.

But none of them had ever made him feel what he felt now.

Because this enemy was not standing outside his gates.

This enemy had been invited inside.

This enemy knew his family.

Knew his marriage.

Knew his children.

And somehow, after seven years of silence, had returned from the dead.

Grace’s father.

Thomas Bennett.

The man everyone believed had died in a car accident six years earlier.

The man whose death had left Grace with no family except the children she was raising alone.

The man who, according to Marcus’s investigation, had been connected to the very conspiracy that destroyed Roman and Grace’s marriage.

Roman stared at the information on the tablet in his hand.

Every detail felt impossible.

But Roman Blackwood had built his empire on one principle:

Never ignore the impossible.

Because impossible things were usually secrets waiting to be uncovered.

Marcus stood in front of Roman’s desk.

“We confirmed the identity.”

Roman’s jaw tightened.

“Thomas Bennett is alive?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Marcus placed another file down.

“He disappeared before the accident report was finalized. Someone paid witnesses to confirm the wrong information.”

Roman looked at the photograph.

An older man.

Gray hair.

Cold eyes.

A face Grace had once trusted.

“What was his connection to my mother?”

Marcus hesitated.

“That’s the problem.”

Roman looked up.

“Explain.”

“We don’t know.”

“You’re telling me someone helped manipulate my entire marriage and we don’t know why?”

Marcus remained calm.

“We know pieces.”

“Then give me the pieces.”

Marcus opened the file.

“Thomas Bennett had financial problems before Grace married you. Massive debt. Failed investments. Lawsuits.”

Roman listened.

“Your mother approached him.”

Roman became still.

“When?”

“Six months before Grace left.”

The room went silent.

Six months.

Someone had been planning.

Not reacting.

Planning.

“They bought him.”

Marcus nodded.

“Looks that way.”

Roman stood.

The anger inside him was no longer burning.

It had become something colder.

More dangerous.

“They didn’t want Grace gone.”

Marcus watched him carefully.

“No.”

“They wanted me to believe she betrayed me.”

“Yes.”

Roman looked toward the window.

Because finally, the question that had haunted him for days had an answer.

Why?

Why destroy a marriage that was already private?

Why go through so much effort?

The answer was simple.

Because Grace was the one person who could make Roman Blackwood choose something other than power.

And someone wanted Roman alone.

Grace noticed the change immediately.

She always did.

Roman had become quieter.

More focused.

More dangerous.

The children noticed too.

Especially Caleb.

That evening, while Roman helped the boys build a model castle, Caleb watched him carefully.

“You’re angry.”

Roman looked at him.

“What makes you say that?”

“You’re doing the thing.”

Roman frowned.

“What thing?”

“Your jaw.”

Roman almost smiled.

“My jaw?”

“You do this.”

Caleb pressed his lips together and looked serious.

“You look like you’re fighting someone.”

Roman stared at his son.

Six years old.

And already reading people better than most adults.

“You’re very observant.”

Caleb shrugged.

“Mom says feelings hide in faces.”

Roman glanced toward Grace.

She was sitting nearby, helping Nora draw.

“She’s right.”

Caleb looked down at the castle pieces.

“Are you going to leave?”

The question hit harder than any accusation.

Roman slowly put down the toy.

“No.”

“Promise?”

Roman looked directly at him.

“Yes.”

Caleb studied him.

Then nodded.

“Okay.”

It was a simple answer.

But Roman knew what it meant.

Trust was not given.

It was earned.

And he had six years of proving to do.

The attack came two days later.

Roman should have expected it.

When powerful people lost control, they became desperate.

And desperate people made mistakes.

It happened during the Blackwood Foundation charity event.

The first public appearance Roman had made with Grace and the children.

The media had gathered outside.

Questions shouted from every direction.

“Mr. Blackwood, are the children yours?”

“Is your engagement with Vanessa Cole over?”

“Did your family hide your children?”

Roman ignored them.

His hand remained gently placed on Grace’s back.

Not possessive.

Protective.

A silent message.

She was not alone anymore.

The children walked between them.

Caleb holding Nora’s hand.

Leo holding Roman’s fingers.

For the first time in seven years, the Blackwood family stood together.

And someone hated seeing it.

Inside the ballroom, everything seemed normal.

Until the screens changed.

The charity presentation disappeared.

A video appeared.

A video of Grace.

From seven years earlier.

Her voice filled the room.

“I married Roman Blackwood because I thought I could access his wealth.”

The room exploded.

Whispers.

Shock.

Cameras turning.

Grace went pale.

Roman immediately looked at her.

Not the screen.

Her.

Because he knew her.

He knew that voice.

He knew that woman.

And he knew she would never say those words.

But the damage was done.

The media had already captured it.

The world had already seen.

Grace stepped backward.

“No.”

Roman grabbed her hand.

“Look at me.”

Her eyes were full of panic.

“I didn’t say that.”

“I know.”

“You believe me?”

Roman’s answer came instantly.

“Yes.”

The certainty in his voice stunned her.

Because seven years ago, she had needed him to say those exact words.

Within hours, the scandal was everywhere.

BLACKWOOD HEIR’S EX-WIFE ACCUSED OF MARRIAGE FRAUD

NEW QUESTIONS SURROUND SECRET CHILDREN

ROMAN BLACKWOOD’S FAMILY WAR EXPLODES

The Blackwood board demanded a response.

Investors panicked.

Competitors celebrated.

And Evelyn Blackwood appeared on television.

Roman watched the interview silently.

His mother sat elegantly in front of the cameras.

“I love my son,” she said.

A lie.

A beautiful one.

“But I believe every family deserves transparency.”

Roman laughed bitterly.

Transparency.

The woman who buried seven years of his life was talking about honesty.

Then she said something that changed everything.

“I always feared Grace Bennett was not who she claimed to be.”

Roman stood.

Marcus looked at him.

“Roman?”

He turned off the television.

“She wants a war.”

Marcus nodded.

“And?”

Roman looked toward the hallway.

Grace was there.

Listening.

And behind her were three children.

His children.

He had spent his life protecting the Blackwood name.

But now he finally understood.

The Blackwood name meant nothing without the people he loved.

“Then she gets one.”

That night, Roman called a press conference.

Everyone told him not to.

His lawyers warned him.

His advisors begged him.

But Roman Blackwood had spent years letting other people control the story.

Never again.

The cameras flashed as he stepped onto the stage.

The room became silent.

“Seven years ago,” Roman began, “my wife left me.”

The reporters leaned forward.

“I believed she chose to leave.”

A pause.

“I was wrong.”

The room erupted.

Roman continued.

“My wife was lied to. Manipulated. And someone inside my own family helped destroy my marriage.”

Questions exploded.

Roman ignored them.

“I will not allow the mother of my children to be publicly attacked for a crime she did not commit.”

Then he looked directly into the cameras.

“Grace Bennett is my wife.”

A shock moved through the room.

“She was my wife seven years ago.”

His voice softened.

“And she is the woman I should have protected.”

Grace watched from backstage.

Tears filled her eyes.

Because Roman was doing something he had never done before.

Choosing love publicly.

Not secretly.

Not privately.

Not when it was convenient.

Publicly.

But as Roman finished the conference, one message arrived.

Unknown number.

One photograph.

A man standing outside a house.

An older man.

Thomas Bennett.

Alive.

The message contained only one sentence.

YOU TOOK MY DAUGHTER. NOW I’LL TAKE YOUR CHILDREN.

Roman’s blood ran cold.

He immediately called Marcus.

“Find him.”

“Already trying.”

“No.”

Roman stared at the photograph.

His expression changed.

This was no longer about reputation.

No longer about business.

No longer about revenge.

This was about his children.

And anyone who threatened them had just made the biggest mistake of their life.

Because Roman Blackwood could forgive betrayal.

He could forgive lies.

He could even forgive losing seven years.

But he would never forgive anyone who tried to take his family away again.

The next morning, Grace woke up to find Roman sitting beside the children’s beds.

All three were asleep.

He looked exhausted.

But peaceful.

She stood in the doorway.

“You stayed all night.”

Roman looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He looked at Caleb, Nora, and Leo.

Then back at her.

“Because I missed seven years.”

Grace’s eyes softened.

“And you think sitting here will fix that?”

“No.”

He stood.

“But I’m going to spend every day proving I’m here now.”

For a moment, Grace saw the man she had loved.

Not the billionaire.

Not the Blackwood heir.

Just Roman.

The man who had once danced with her barefoot in their kitchen.

The man who had promised forever.

A promise broken by lies.

Not by him.

But before she could answer—

The alarm system suddenly screamed.

The house security team rushed in.

Roman immediately moved in front of Grace and the children.

“What happened?”

The guard looked terrified.

“Sir…”

He held out an envelope.

“It was found inside the house.”

Roman took it.

His name was written on the front.

In handwriting he recognized.

Thomas Bennett.

He opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

A photograph of Grace as a baby.

On the back were five words.

ASK YOUR WIFE WHO SHE IS.

Roman looked at Grace.

And for the first time since she returned…

She looked afraid.

Not for herself.

For him.

Because there was one secret left.

One secret even Grace had never told him.

May you like

And Roman was about to discover that the woman he loved had been hiding something much bigger than a lost marriage.
