Chapter 2 - Shattered Glass and Cold Steel

The explosion of safety glass sounded like a dozen glass vases hitting concrete simultaneously.

Instantly, Ethan’s posture changed. In a single fluid motion, he pulled me down behind the heavy mahogany head table, his body completely covering mine.

"Cover!" Marcus shouted.

The seven other SEALs moved as a single organism. Two swept the remaining wedding guests toward the secure kitchen exit, while three others drew concealed sidearms from beneath their tailored tuxedo jackets.

Through the dust and glittering shards of glass, two men dressed in black tactical gear dropped onto the ballroom floor from the courtyard patio. They weren't after the guests. They were moving directly for the silver gift box on the table.

"Hold!" Ethan commanded, shifting his weight over me. He pulled a compact 9mm pistol from his ankle holster—a backup weapon I hadn't even known he was carrying beneath his wedding trousers.

The lead intruder reached for the velvet-lined box, but Marcus sprinted across the polished floor, slamming his heavy shoulder directly into the man’s chest. The intruder flew backward, crashing into a three-tiered wedding cake that collapsed in a shower of white frosting and silver pearls.

The second intruder raised a suppressed weapon, but Ethan fired two precise shots into the man’s tactical vest. The impact knocked the gunman off his feet, driving the air from his lungs as he hit the floor with a heavy thud.

Panic erupted among the remaining family members. My mother screamed hysterically, hiding beneath a table draped in lace, while my father stood frozen in the center of the room, paralyzed by the sudden violence.

"Vanessa! Get down!" I yelled, pulling myself out from under Ethan just enough to reach for my sister, who was standing frozen near the shattered window, paralyzed by fear.

An intruder reached for her arm, aiming to drag her out toward the dark garden.

"Maya, stay down!" Ethan barked.

He lunged forward, grabbing the intruder’s wrist, twisting it sharply until a sickening snap echoed through the air. The man dropped his weapon, groaning in pain, and Ethan threw him to the floor, securing him with a heavy knee to his spine.

Within forty-five seconds, the room fell silent again, save for the sound of rain beginning to patter against the broken glass panes and my mother's muffled sobs.

The two intruders were pinned to the floor by Ethan’s team.

Ethan stood up, adjusting his tuxedo collar. He didn't have a single spot of dirt on him, though his hands were steady and dark with adrenaline. He turned to me, his eyes sweeping over my body to check for injuries.

"Are you hit?" he asked gently.

"No," I whispered, wiping a speck of dust from my veil. "I'm okay."

He reached out, taking my hand, pulling me up onto my feet. "Good. Because your audit just became a federal espionage trial."

Outside, sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder as high-powered floodlights began to sweep across the estate grounds. FBI tactical units and local police were surrounding the property.

My father slowly walked toward us, his hands trembling violently. He looked at the shattered glass, the fallen cake, the men in handcuffs, and finally at me.

"Maya..." he stammered, his voice weak. "What... what have you done?"

I looked at my father—the man who had spent thirty years ignoring my existence, passing me over for promotions, and treating my corporate compliance career as a cute little hobby while pouring millions into my sister’s fraudulent ventures.

"I didn't do this, Dad," I said, holding Ethan’s hand tightly. "Vanessa did. I just stopped her from taking us all down with her."
