Chapter 4 - The Tides Turn

By seven o'clock on Christmas morning, the snow had stopped falling, leaving the Connecticut countryside wrapped in a blinding, brilliant white.
I sat in the study of my private estate in Greenwich—a stone house surrounded by ancient oaks that I had purchased fifteen years ago, long before Richard Vale ever entered my life. A fire crackled in the hearth, casting warm orange light across the built-in mahogany bookshelves.
My lead attorney, Marcus Vance, sat across from me, sipping black coffee while reviewing a stack of fresh filings on his tablet.
"The sheriff served the initial notice of default and the temporary possession order an hour ago," Marcus said, looking up with a razor-sharp smile. "Richard tried to argue that the property was marital residential real estate and couldn't be seized without a ninety-day cure period."
"And what did Deputy Miller tell him?" I asked, taking a sip of tea.
"Deputy Miller informed him that because the property was held under a commercial land trust that had been pledged as security for an active business line of credit, standard residential foreclosure protections do not apply," Marcus replied. "They have until four o'clock this afternoon to vacate the premises with their personal clothing. Everything else stays."
I nodded slowly. "And Brandon’s logistics company?"
"We filed the lien enforcement on his warehouse in Stamford at midnight," Marcus said, tapping his tablet. "His fleet of six trucks has been impounded by the marshal. His primary client—a regional organic food distributor—has already been notified that his corporate accounts are frozen under the debt assignment clause. By noon, Brandon’s business will effectively cease to exist."
I leaned back against the leather armchair, staring into the dancing flames of the fireplace.
For three years, I had watched Brandon abuse his father's employees, belittle staff, and treat the world as if it owed him a living simply because his last name was Vale. He had called me a parasite. He had thrown a gravy-stained document onto my plate and told me to learn what I was worth.
Now he was learning what he was worth without his father’s stolen money to shield him.
"What about Andre Collins?" I asked.
Marcus chuckled softly. "Andre spent his Christmas morning calling senior partners at his law firm, trying to manage the damage. But unfortunately for him, the grand jury subpoena we requested regarding his offshore accounts in St. Kitts was delivered to his managing partner’s home at six AM. The firm’s executive committee has already suspended him pending an internal compliance investigation."
"And Beatrice?"
"Beatrice is currently at a hotel in Hartford, trying to use her credit cards," Marcus said. "Which, of course, were declined, because they were supplementary cards issued on Richard’s corporate account—the same account that was frozen by Aegis Holdings twelve hours ago."
A gentle knock sounded at the study door.
My housekeeper, Elena, stepped inside, carrying a small silver tray holding a sealed white envelope.
"This was just delivered by a courier, Judge Mercer," Elena said politely. "A young man left it at the front gate."
I took the envelope. On the front, written in shaking, frantic handwriting, were the words: Catherine - Please.
I broke the wax seal and pulled out the single sheet of stationery.
It was from Richard.
Catherine, I am begging you to stop this. Brandon is facing bankruptcy. My sister is hysterical. The bank has locked my business accounts. I know I made mistakes. I know I let my family treat you badly, but I loved you. I still love you. Please come back to the house. Let us talk like husband and wife before everything we built is destroyed. Your husband, Richard.
I read the letter once.
Then I tossed it into the open fire.
May you like
I watched the white paper curl into black ash, the gold lettering of his name disappearing into the embers.
"Tell the sheriff to double the security detail at the Elmwood estate, Marcus," I said, my voice cold and firm. "Richard isn't trying to talk because he realized he loves me. He's trying to talk because he realized he's broke."
