Chapter 10 - The Heir to the House

Eighteen months later.

Spring had come to the Chicago Gold Coast. The gardens of the Calvetti estate were a sea of blooming red roses, green hedges, and sweet-smelling jasmine.

The underworld was quiet. With Vance in federal prison and the rival syndicates absorbed or neutralized by Vincent’s flawless financial and military strategy, Chicago had entered an unprecedented era of peace under the absolute reign of the Calvetti family.

Out on the grand sunlit lawn, seven-year-old Leo was running through the grass, laughing as he kicked a soccer ball with Carmine, who was trying—and failing miserably—to look like a serious bodyguard while pretending to be a clumsy goalie.

On the stone terrace, sitting on a plush outdoor sofa beneath a wide white umbrella, sat Clara.

She wore a soft pastel yellow dress, looking radiant, healthy, and deeply happy.

Vincent walked out from the French doors, carrying a tray with fresh iced tea and sliced fruit. He wore simple trousers and a dark blue linen shirt, looking relaxed, younger, and completely free of the cold darkness that had once defined his life.

He set the tray down on the table, sat beside Clara, and pulled her gently into his side, kissing her temple with lingering warmth.

"How is my queen feeling today?" Vincent asked softly, his broad hand coming down to rest gently over her swollen stomach.

Clara smiled, placing her hand over his, resting her head against his shoulder as the soft breeze carried the scent of roses across the terrace.

Six months ago, a specialized medical team in New York—retained by Clara after she spent three weeks researching cutting-edge micro-surgeries that Chicago doctors had dismissed—had successfully repaired the old nerve damage from Vincent’s ambush injury.

"The doctor said the baby is very active today," Clara whispered, a tear of pure, overwhelming joy sparkling in her grey eye. "He’s kicking."

Vincent went completely still. His dark eyes softened into a look of such overwhelming tenderness and awe that it stripped away every remaining piece of the Baron Butcher.

He slowly leaned down, pressing his face against her soft dress, feeling the tiny, unmistakable kick of his unborn child against his cheek.

"A son," Vincent whispered, his voice trembling with an emotion so deep it shook his soul.

"A son," Clara agreed, gently running her fingers through his dark hair. "The new heir to the Calvetti family."

Vincent sat up, looking into Clara’s eyes—the grey eyes that had looked past his terrifying reputation, past his cold stone walls, and taught him how to love.

"Not just an heir, Clara," Vincent murmured, pulling her into a deep, passionate, eternal kiss that tasted of sweet spring and eternal promise. "My miracle."

Out on the lawn, little Leo scored a goal, shouting with glee as Carmine cheered loudly.

The sun shone bright over the house that had once been built of fear and blood—now transformed forever into a fortress of light, love, and unbreakable life.
