Chapter 6 - REBUILDING THE FOUNDATION

With the legal battles settled and Arthur's faction completely dismantled, Nathan set out to rebuild his life from the ground up.
His first decision was to step back from the day-to-day operations of Whitaker Systems, appointing Julian Vance as interim Managing Director. Nathan realized that all the billions in the world meant nothing if he wasn't present to see his children grow up.
He purchased a magnificent, historic estate nestled in the rolling countryside of Chester County, Pennsylvania—only an hour away from Maple Ridge, but fortified with state-of-the-art, invisible security systems designed by Vance Sterling.
The estate featured rolling green pastures, an old stone barn, a pond, and a sprawling stone manor house with large windows that let in the sunlight.
On a warm afternoon in late spring, Nathan stood on the back terrace, watching Leo and Maya run through the tall grass, chasing a young Golden Retriever puppy Nathan had surprised them with earlier that week.
Claire walked out onto the terrace, carrying two glasses of iced tea. She wore a simple summer dress, her brown hair falling freely over her shoulders.
"You're thinking again," Claire teased gently, handing him a glass and leaning against the stone balustrade beside him.
"I'm just watching them," Nathan confessed, taking a sip. "Every morning I wake up, I still have a second where I'm terrified it was all a dream. That I'm still alone in that Manhattan penthouse."
Claire reached out, lacing her fingers through his. "It's real, Nathan. We're here."
"I visited Maple Ridge yesterday," Nathan said softly.
Claire turned her head, surprised. "You did? Why?"
"I bought Miller's Market," Nathan smiled gently. "And I established a ten-million-dollar community trust for the town. I wanted to make sure that the place that kept my wife and children safe for three years never suffers from economic hardship again."
Claire’s eyes filled with tears of appreciation. She stepped closer, wrapping her arms around his waist. "You really are a remarkable man, Nathan Whitaker."
"I'm just a man who realized what actually matters," Nathan whispered, resting his forehead against hers.
"Daddy! Mama! Come look!" Leo’s excited voice echoed from the pond. "The puppy found a frog!"

Nathan laughed, grabbing Claire’s hand. "Duty calls, Mrs. Whitaker."
As they walked down the grassy slope toward their children, the heavy weight that had rested on Nathan’s chest for three years finally dissolved completely into the warm afternoon air.
