Chapter 4 - The Infiltration of the Boardroom

The morning sun rose over Chicago in a cold, brilliant shade of gold, reflecting off the glass walls of the Vance Tower downtown.

While Dr. Sterling began the intensive neutralizer treatment in Mom’s hospital room—watching her vitals stabilize minute by minute—Julian Vance stepped out of an unmarked black elevator on the 50th floor of his corporate headquarters.

He wasn't wearing his hospital clothes anymore. He wore a bespoke double-breasted navy suit, his dark hair combed back neatly, his face carved out of pure granite. Beside him walked Matteo, carrying a thick leather briefcase loaded with encrypted drive arrays and financial audit files.

Inside the grand glass boardroom, twenty board members sat around a forty-foot mahogany table. At the head of the table sat Arthur Vance—an eighty-year-old patriarch with silver hair, a pale, hawk-like face, and cold gray eyes that had crushed competitors for half a century.

"As acting chairman," Arthur was saying to the room, his voice raspy but commanding, "and in light of my son Julian's sudden medical emergency, I am moving to execute Clause 9 of the corporate charter. All voting proxy rights held by the CEO will temporarily revert to the founder's trust until—"

The heavy double doors of the boardroom slammed open.

Arthur stopped mid-sentence. The entire room turned.

Julian walked into the boardroom with quiet, agonizing slowness. His footsteps made no sound on the thick plush carpet.

"You're executing Clause 9 a bit early, Father," Julian said, his voice echoing off the floor-to-ceiling windows. "I'm not in an ICU. And I'm certainly not dead."

Gasps erupted across the table. Two board members immediately stood up, while Arthur Vance remained frozen in his high-backed leather chair, his knuckles whitening as he gripped the armrests.

"Julian," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low gravel. "You look... surprisingly well for a man who collapsed in Lincoln Park yesterday."

"I have a very strong heart, Father," Julian replied, walking up to the opposite end of the long table, resting his hands flat on the polished wood. "And unlike you, I have people in my life who actually care enough to save me when I fall."

"This is an internal board meeting," Arthur hissed, his eyes flashing with fury. "You have no right to interrupt procedure—"

"I am the CEO of this company," Julian cut in, his voice cutting through the room like a broadsword. "And as of ten minutes ago, I am the owner of fifty-one percent of all outstanding voting shares."

Arthur laughed—a short, dry sound like dead leaves scraping across pavement. "You don't have the capital. The board hasn't approved the treasury release."

"I didn't use the treasury," Julian said calmly. He signaled to Matteo, who set the leather briefcase onto the table, opened it, and pulled out a stack of legal documents. "I used my personal liquid assets to buy out the offshore holding accounts in Grand Cayman. The ones you thought were hidden under dummy shell corporations, Father. The ones you used to transfer twelve million dollars two weeks ago to a bio-pharmaceutical laboratory in Zurich."

The color drained instantly from Arthur Vance's face.

"Compound 14," Julian said softly, his voice carrying a lethal weight that made the entire boardroom fall into dead silence. "A rare synthetic neurotoxin. You used it on Sarah Miller fourteen days ago because your private investigators told you she was coming back to Chicago. And you used it on me on Tuesday because you realized I was about to find her."

The room erupted into shocked whispers. Board members looked at each other in absolute horror.

"This is absurd!" Arthur roared, standing up so fast his chair rolled back against the glass wall. "This man is delusional! He's suffering from neurological distress from his medical episode! Guards! Remove him from the building!"

Two private security guards moved toward the door, but before they could reach Julian, four federal agents wearing navy badges stepped into the room from the private elevator hall.

"Arthur Vance?" the lead agent announced, pulling a signed federal warrant from his jacket. "Federal Bureau of Investigation. You are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, illegal procurement of restricted biological agents, and corporate fraud."

Arthur stood frozen at the head of the table. His silver hair seemed to lose its lustre instantly; his tall, imposing frame suddenly looked frail, small, and pathetic under the bright fluorescent lights of the room he had ruled for forty years.

Julian didn't look at his father with hatred or satisfaction. He looked at him with cold, absolute indifference.

"You took seven years of my life, Father," Julian said softly as the federal agents clicked steel handcuffs around the old man's wrists. "You took seven years of my daughters' lives. But you didn't win."

As Arthur was led away in silence through the marble lobby, Julian turned his back on the boardroom, pulled out his phone, and dialed the hospital.

"Sterling," Julian said, his voice breaking with emotion. "How is she?"

May you like

Through the phone, Dr. Sterling’s voice came back, clear, soft, and filled with joy.

"She just opened her eyes, Julian. She's asking for her girls."
