Chapter 9 - The Siege at Baraboo

“Clamps in position!” Dr. Rostova called out, her gloved hands working in perfect synchronization with Harrison inside the chamber. “Flushing saline buffer! Hold the pressure!”

Outside the cabin, thunder cracked violently directly overhead, shaking the wooden beams of the workshop ceiling.

Suddenly, the heavy roar of multiple engines drowned out the sound of the rain.

I ran to the workshop window, pulling back the heavy thermal curtain.

Three black armored vans had broken through the chain-link perimeter gate. They skidded to a stop in the muddy yard. Eight heavily armed security contractors in tactical gear stepped out, holding carbines, led by Dr. Victor Vance holding a mobile signal jammer.

“They found us!” I screamed, turning back to the room.

Detective Miller instantly pulled his service weapon, racking the slide. “David, get behind the steel workbench! Sarah, stay by that chamber!”

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Gunfire erupted outside as Vance’s men began shooting out the lock on the cabin’s front door!

Detective Miller kicked over a heavy wooden table near the entryway, returning fire through the side window, his shots echoing like thunder claps inside the enclosed cabin.

“Miller!” Vance’s voice bellowed through a megaphone outside. “Surrender the child and the research data! You are interfering with a federal defense asset! You have three minutes before we breach with tear gas!”

Inside the hyperbaric chamber, Dr. Harrison didn't look up. Blood splashed against his clear visor, but his hands remained frozen in place, holding a delicate pair of micro-forceps millimeter-by-millimeter away from Ethan’s main artery.

“I can't rush this!” Harrison yelled over the sound of gunfire. “If my hand slips one tenth of a millimeter, the artery severs!”

“Take your time, Doc!” Detective Miller shouted back, reloading his secondary magazine. “We’ll hold the door!”

David grabbed a heavy iron pry bar from Rostova’s workbench, his eyes burning with a terrifying, primal fury. “They aren't taking my son again!”

BOOM!

The front door exploded inward as a tactical breach charge detonated! Splinters of oak and dust filled the hallway!

Two tactical guards lunged through the smoke, weapons raised!

David screamed, charging forward with the iron bar, swinging it with all his strength, smashing the first guard’s helmet and sending him crashing into the wall! Detective Miller fired three precise shots into the second guard’s body armor, dropping him to the concrete floor!

Out in the yard, Vance watched in disbelief as his tactical team was pushed back by a father and a small-town police officer.

Inside the chamber, Dr. Harrison let out a long, ragged breath.

“I have it,” he whispered.

He slowly lifted his forceps. Held tightly in the steel teeth of the instrument was a tiny, cylindrical silver capsule—glistening with dark fluid, completely intact, un-ruptured.

Dr. Rostova instantly dropped the capsule into a heavy lead-lined containment cylinder filled with argon gel, snapping the airtight lid shut.

“Node secured!” Rostova yelled. “Pressure releasing in three... two... one!”

The chamber hissed loudly as the equalization valve opened. The heavy steel door swung wide.

Dr. Harrison immediately clamped Ethan’s blood vessel, applying topical hemostatic sealant, and began stitching the incision with lightning-fast, expert movements.

“Vitals returning to normal!” Rostova reported, checking the monitor. “Heart rate one-ten. Oxygen saturation ninety-nine percent!”

I dropped to my knees beside the gurney, grabbing my son’s warm, soft hand, tears pouring down my face in a flood of pure relief. “Ethan... oh baby, you’re okay... you’re okay!”

Outside, the wail of dozens of police sirens began to rise over the sound of the storm.

Detective Miller’s precinct dispatcher had alerted state troopers, county sheriffs, and the FBI field office in Milwaukee to an ongoing armed assault by an unauthorized private militia.

Fourteen state police cruisers swept into the driveway, their lights turning the rainy forest into a sea of flashing red, blue, and white.

Dr. Victor Vance dropped his megaphone into the mud as FBI tactical agents swarmed the yard, forcing his security guards to the ground at gunpoint.

Through the broken cabin window, I watched as federal agents slapped steel handcuffs around Vance’s wrists, leading him away into the pouring rain.
