Chapter 4 - The Recovery of Drew

The pediatric rehabilitation unit at Nicklaus Children's Hospital was brightly painted with murals of sea turtles, palm trees, and ocean waves.

Three weeks had passed since the court hearing.

Drew sat on the edge of a physical therapy table, wearing a lightweight waterproof cast on his left leg. Beside him sat Lily, who had gained four pounds under proper medical care and now had bright, rosy cheeks. She was happily coloring in a book with yellow crayons, her small shoes kicking rhythmic patterns against the floorboards.

Peter sat on a low stool in front of Drew, holding a blue leather soccer ball.

"Alright, buddy," Peter said with a soft smile. "Dr. Evans says if you can do five leg lifts today without resting, we can go down to the hospital garden and feed the koi fish."

Drew looked at his cast, his small forehead creasing with doubt. "It hurts when I lift it, Uncle Pete."

"I know it hurts," Peter said gently, reaching out to place his large hand over Drew's small shoulder. "But do you remember what I told you on the porch?"

Drew looked up into Peter's eyes. "You said I was brave."

"You're the bravest boy I know," Peter said, his voice thick with emotion. "You carried your sister seven blocks. You saved her life, Drew. A little leg exercise isn't going to stop you."

Drew took a deep, shaky breath. He gritted his teeth, his small hands gripping the vinyl edge of the table.

Slowly, agonizingly, he raised his cast-bound leg two inches off the table.

"One," Peter counted proudly.

Drew’s leg trembled, but he didn't lower it. Three inches.

"Two."

"Keep going, Drew!" Lily squeaked from her coloring book, waving a yellow crayon in the air. "Up! Up!"

Drew let out a small grunting sound, his teeth pressed together, raising the cast higher until it was parallel with the floor.

"Three... four... five!" Peter cheered.

Drew dropped his leg back onto the table, letting out a big breath, a huge, radiant grin breaking across his pale face—the very first real smile Peter had seen on the boy's face in three long years.

"I did it!" Drew shouted.

"You destroyed it, buddy!" Peter laughed, sweeping Drew into a big, warm hug, being careful of the cast. Lily immediately scrambled off her chair and threw her tiny arms around both of them, her small head resting against Peter's neck.

At that moment, Sarah Vance stepped into the therapy room, holding a blue folder under her arm. She smiled warmly at the scene before walking over to Peter.

"Got a second, Peter?" she asked softly.

Peter set the kids up with a new puzzle game on the table and stepped out into the quiet hallway with Sarah.

"What's the update from the State Attorney?" Peter asked, wiping his hands on his jeans.

"The preliminary autopsy results came back from the medical examiner," Sarah reported, her tone growing serious. "High concentrations of Digoxin were found in Aaron's bone marrow tissue. The toxicology report is ironclad. Reena's defense attorney tried to negotiate a plea deal for second-degree murder yesterday, but the prosecutor rejected it. They are seeking Life Without Parole."

Peter closed his eyes, taking a long, deep breath of relief. "And the custody hearing?"

Sarah opened her blue folder and pulled out a single sheet of paper bearing the golden seal of the State of Florida.

"Temporary custody has been formally granted to you, Peter," Sarah said, a bright, genuine smile lighting up her face. "The home study on your apartment passed with flying colors. You are officially their legal guardian."

Peter took the paper. His eyes scanned the official court language: ...full physical and legal custody of Drew Aaron Calder and Lily Grace Calder granted to Peter Michael Calder.

A single tear escaped Peter's eye, dripping onto the paper.

"Thank you, Sarah," Peter whispered, his voice cracking. "Thank you for listening to me when I showed up at the hospital."

"You didn't give up on them, Peter," Sarah said softly, patting his arm. "Now go take those kids to see the fish."
