Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of Madison

The silence in Courtroom 4B was deafening.

Evelyn stood frozen behind her table, her hands clutching her designer handbag so tightly her knuckles turned blue.

"Your Honor," Sterling stuttered, trying to shield his client. "These... these are complex family accounting matters that have been distorted by—"

"Silence, Counsel," Judge Thorne commanded. She turned her sharp eyes to Madison. "Mrs. Sutton. Step to the podium."

Madison looked around frantically, clutching her husband Luke’s arm. Luke, however, pulled his arm away, taking a subtle step back into the gallery seating. He was a corporate attorney himself, and he clearly recognized that the ship was taking on water fast.

"Your Honor..." Madison squeaked, stepping forward, her lower lip trembling. "I... I didn't know anything about accounts. I was just having my wedding..."

"Mrs. Sutton," Judge Thorne said, pulling a document from the binder. "According to these subpoenaed text messages provided by the wedding videographer's audio logs, forty-eight hours before your wedding, you sent the following message to your mother: 'Make sure Claire is out of commission for the Wednesday hearing, or the mortgage check won't clear.'"

Gasps echoed through the small courtroom gallery.

Madison went pale, her eyes darting toward me in wild panic. "I... I was joking! It was a joke!"

"Pulling a chair away from a woman with three fused vertebrae is not a joke, Mrs. Sutton," Judge Thorne said coldly. "It is an aggravated assault."

Judge Thorne adjusted her robe and picked up her pen.

"Court ruling on the emergency petition," Judge Thorne announced firmly. "The petition for conservatorship filed by Evelyn Mercer is DENIED with prejudice. An immediate injunction is placed on all accounts held by Evelyn Mercer, Madison Mercer-Sutton, and the Mercer Holding Company."

She looked at the court bailiff.

"Notify the Henrico County District Attorney’s office that this court is referring Mrs. Evelyn Mercer and Mrs. Madison Mercer-Sutton for grand larceny, identity theft, and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud."

CRACK!

The gavel slammed down like a thunderbolt.

Evelyn dropped into her chair, her face ash-gray, while Madison burst into loud, hysterical tears, turning to Luke for comfort. But Luke didn't hold her. He simply picked up his coat, turned his back on his bride of three days, and walked out of the courtroom without looking back.

Lena leaned over my wheelchair, whispering in my ear. "One down. One to go."

As we wheeled out of the courtroom, Arthur Vance leaned down beside me. "The annuity board has already received Judge Thorne's ruling, Claire. The $480,000 final payment is being wired directly to your private, newly established account within twenty-four hours."

I leaned my head back against the leather headrest of my wheelchair, closing my eyes.

The money was finally safe.

But as we reached the lobby, my phone buzzed with an emergency notification from my personal bank account.

Evelyn wasn't done yet. She was trying to drain the remaining joint emergency reserves before the asset freeze took full effect.
