Chapter 14 - Unearthing the Foundation

"My father didn't have an estate," I said, my voice laced with disbelief. "My mother spent ten years telling me he died bankrupt."

Marcus Vance offered a tight, sympathetic smile. He opened his briefcase and pulled out a stack of bound legal documents bearing a official state seal. "Your mother lied to you, Maya. Your father, Arthur Vance, was a co-founder of a commercial real estate trust in Colorado. Before he passed, he placed his entire forty-percent equity stake into an irrevocable trust designated solely for you, to be released upon your thirtieth birthday or the birth of your first child."

I felt the ground sway beneath my feet. Ethan caught me by the waist, supporting my weight as I stared at the lawyer.

"The trust was worth nearly three million dollars at the time of his passing," Marcus continued calmly. "However, for the past decade, your mother, Eleanor, illegally acted as a temporary conservator by forging medical documents claiming you were mentally unfit to manage finances. She spent years draining the trust’s dividends to fund Julian’s failed business ventures and her own lavish lifestyle."

A heavy, suffocating realization washed over me. All those years when I was working three jobs in my twenties, burning myself out to send money home to "save" my mother from eviction, she was sitting on a multi-million-dollar trust that my father had left specifically to protect me.

She hadn't just used me—she had systematically stolen my life, keeping me financially dependent and emotionally broken so I would never investigate my father's legacy.

"Why are you telling us this now?" Ethan asked sternly, his arm still firm around my waist.

"Because three weeks ago, when your daughter Evelyn’s birth certificate was registered in the state of New Mexico, it triggered an automatic audit by the trust’s managing bank," Marcus explained. "Eleanor tried to intercept the audit notification, but she failed. The bank realized the fraud, revoked her conservatorship, and retained my firm to restore the remaining assets to Maya immediately."

Marcus handed the file to me. "There is approximately one point two million dollars remaining in the principal fund, Maya. But more importantly, because Eleanor committed systematic federal banking fraud, she no longer has any legal standing. In fact, federal prosecutors are already preparing an indictment against both her and Julian."

Tears spilled over my eyelashes—not tears of sorrow, but tears of overwhelming rage and liberation. The storm cloud that had hung over my entire youth wasn't a tragic twist of fate; it was a calculated web of lies constructed by the very person who was supposed to love me.

"Where are they now?" I asked, wiping my cheeks.

"They know the audit caught them," Marcus replied. "Julian is hiding out at Eleanor's lake house in Taos. They are desperate, Maya. They know the authorities are closing in, and they know you are the only one with the legal power to drop civil restitution charges."

May you like

"I will never drop the charges," I said, my voice hardening like tempered steel. "Not for her. Not for Julian."

"I expected you to say that," Marcus nodded approvingly. "Which is why you need to be careful. They have nothing left to lose."
