Chapter 7 - The Counterstrike

By 3:00 PM that afternoon, the legal landscape had completely inverted.
Instead of fighting a defensive battle over Ethan’s estate, Arthur Vance filed a massive multi-count civil and criminal complaint against Chloe, Richard Sterling, and Brenda Higgins.
The charges were staggering:
Attempted Grand Larceny
Forgery of a Legal Instrument
Notary Fraud and Perjury
Defamation Per Se and Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress
We didn't just stop at the courtroom.
Arthur Vance held an immediate press conference on the steps of the courthouse—the exact same steps where Chloe had tried to humiliate me two weeks earlier.
With local news cameras rolling, Vance held up the certified Cleveland Clinic records alongside Brenda Higgins' sworn confession.
"The claims made against Mrs. Lisa Whittaker were entirely fraudulent," Vance declared to the reporters. "They were built upon a forged codicil, a bribed notary, and a fabricated paternity claim designed to extortionately strip a grieving widow of her lawful property."
The media narrative flipped instantly.
The headlines changed overnight: Widow Exposes Sister’s Shocking $800,000 Fraud Scheme. Disgraced Attorney facing Disbarment and Criminal Charges in Forgery Plot.
When I arrived home that evening, the street was quiet. The news vans were gone. The silence of my house was no longer heavy or oppressive—it felt clean. Pure. Protected.
My front door bell rang at 7:00 PM.
I opened it to find my mother standing on the porch. She looked twenty years older, her eyes red and swollen, holding a small tupperware container of soup.
"Lisa..." she sobbed, stepping onto the threshold. "I... I didn't know. I swear to God, Lisa, I didn't know she was lying!"
I stood in the doorway, not offering a hug, not inviting her inside.
"You didn't know she was lying, Mom," I said quietly. "But you believed her. The second she accused Ethan, you took her side. You called me bitter. You told me to give her money to keep the peace."
"She's your sister!" my mother wept. "She's ruined, Lisa! The police were at her house an hour ago! Sterling's law firm dropped him, and Brenda Higgins is testifying against them both to avoid jail time! Chloe is facing criminal charges!"
"She made her choices, Mom," I said, my voice steady and unyielding.
"Can't you drop the civil suit?" my mother begged, grabbing my arm. "She has a baby! If you sue her for defamation, she'll lose everything! She'll lose her house!"
I gently, firmly removed my mother's hand from my arm.
"Chloe didn't care if I lost my house while I was grieving my husband," I said softly. "She brought a fraudulent will to a one-year-old's birthday party. She dragged Ethan's name through the mud for money."
"So you're going to destroy your own family?" my mother cried.
May you like
"No," I replied, looking her straight in the eyes. "Chloe destroyed the family. I'm just cleaning up the trash."
I gently closed the door.
