Chapter 9 - The Legacy of Living

The months melted into a beautiful, sun-drenched blur of milestones. Eli learned to crawl across the polished concrete floors of the Glass Estate, his tiny hands leaving smudges on the glass walls that I never bothered to wipe away. They were markers of life. Markers of a home that belonged completely to us.

Under my leadership, Vance Holdings underwent a massive ethical restructuring. We liquidated the luxury real estate holdings my mother had coveted and redirected forty million dollars into the Arthur & Eli Vance Foundation—a non-profit organization dedicated to funding emergency medical care and housing for single mothers and infants across the eastern seaboard.

On a crisp spring morning, Grandfather Arthur visited the estate. He walked without his silver cane for the first time in a year, his arm linked tightly with mine as we watched Eli chase a golden retriever puppy across the green grass of the cliffs.

"Your father would have loved this view, Avery," Grandfather said softly, his voice full of a rare, emotional depth. "He always wanted to build a house out here, but Eleanor insisted on the city mansion so she could be close to the country club. You gave him his dream back."

"I gave myself a dream too, Grandfather," I said, leaning my head against his shoulder. "I gave myself a son who will never know what it feels like to have his worth measured in dollars and cents."

David walked out from the kitchen, carrying Eli on his shoulders, both of them laughing as the ocean wind caught their hair. David had officially moved into the estate a month prior, his steady, supportive presence completing the family I had never thought I was allowed to have.
