Chapter 8 - The Judgment of the Wolves

The jury deliberation took exactly forty-two minutes—the shortest deliberation for a federal capital conspiracy case in the history of the state.

When the twelve men and women returned to the box, the atmosphere inside Courtroom 602 was heavy with the scent of an impending execution. Arthur Calder stood with his head bowed, his hands cuffed behind his back, his body shaking so violently that two federal marshals had to support his weight. Eleanor sat perfectly rigid, her eyes blank and glassy, her mind having completely snapped under the reality of her exposure.

"The defendants will rise for the verdict," the clerk announced.

The jury foreman, a stern-faced woman with dark hair and an unyielding posture, stood up, holding a single sheet of parchment.

"On count one of the indictment, federal child abduction across state lines: we find the defendant, Arthur Calder, guilty. We find the defendant, Eleanor Calder, guilty."

"On count two, inheritance trust fraud and grand larceny: we find the defendant, Arthur Calder, guilty. We find the defendant, Eleanor Calder, guilty."

"On count three, criminal conspiracy to commit forced medical termination of a pregnancy: we find the defendant, Arthur Calder, guilty. We find the defendant, Eleanor Calder, guilty."

As the word guilty was repeated twenty-four times through the courtroom speaker, Vanessa Calder let out a loud, piercing wail from the back of the gallery, burying her face into her hands as the final remnants of her family's social registry were permanently, irreversibly destroyed.

Judge Thorne looked down from his high bench, his eyes flashing behind his heavy glasses as he prepared to pass sentence.

"Arthur and Eleanor Calder," Judge Thorne said, his voice dropping into an icy, resonant whisper that silenced the room completely. "You spent twenty-nine years living a life that belonged to someone else. You stole an infant from a neonatal ICU, used her life as an asset to secure a corporate fortune, and when that asset threatened to expose your greed through a natural pregnancy, you turned into wolves, lunging at her own flesh and blood on a kitchen floor. This court finds your actions to be a monstrous insult to the very concept of family."

He struck his gavel down with a force that seemed to echo through the granite foundations of the city.

"Arthur Calder, you are sentenced to forty-five years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole. Eleanor Calder, you are sentenced to forty-five years in the same facility. The entirety of your commercial assets, your residential estates, and the inheritance trust will be immediately liquidated by the federal government and transferred into a permanent restoration fund for Dr. Laurel Monroe and her daughter, Sarah. Take them away."

As the marshals dragged the elder Calders out through the side doors, their handcuffs clicking loudly against the marble, Arthur looked back at Claire one last time, his mouth opening as if to beg for forgiveness, but Claire simply turned her head away, her hand locking into Laurel’s as the doors slammed shut behind them forever.
