Chapter 10 - The Horizon of Alice

One year later.

The early morning sun rose over the quiet, shimmering waters of Lake Champlain.

A forty-foot modern sailboat glided smoothly across the blue bay, its clean white sails catching a steady, warm autumn breeze.

I stood at the wheel, wearing a soft grey cashmere sweater, my hair tied back, feeling the crisp, clean air fill my lungs.

Beside me stood Dr. Elias Ward—the ER doctor who had looked at Mark in that hospital hallway and refused to let a lie stand as truth. Elias had left emergency medicine six months ago to head our foundation's rural medical transport network, ensuring that low-income families across Northern New England received emergency medical care and supplies regardless of weather or wealth.

"Heading looks good, Captain," Elias smiled, pointing toward the open water where the sun was casting millions of diamond-like reflections across the surface.

"Steady at zero-two-zero," I smiled back, leaning my head gently against his shoulder.

Down on the forward deck, Sarah’s two young children were laughing, watching a pair of bald eagles soar high above the cedar trees along the shoreline.

My phone rang inside my coat pocket.

It was a notification from our international logistics hub in Montreal:

All sixteen deep-freeze transports arrived safely at destination. Temperature variance: 0.0 degrees. System status: Perfect.

I put the phone away, wrapped my arm through Elias’s, and looked out over the vast, shimmering horizon stretching toward Canada and beyond.

The blizzard was gone.

The cold was broken.

And the story that began in a dark ditch on I-91 had finally found its true, unbreakable, and beautiful home.
