Chapter 9 - The Harbor at Twilight

Later that night, long after the gala had ended and the last guests had departed, I walked along the harbor promenade in Boston.

The summer night air was cool, smelling of salt water and fresh pine from the nearby docks. The city skyline reflected across the dark, still waters of the harbor like thousands of scattered diamonds.

I sat down on a teak bench overlooking the water, kicking off my high heels, letting the cool sea breeze brush against my skin.

My phone rang softly in my evening clutch.

It was a text message from an unknown number.

I opened it.

Attached was a single photograph of a small, rustic workshop in rural Maine. Standing inside was Brooke, wearing simple work clothes, standing behind a small lathe, holding a wooden bowl she had just turned.

Below the photo was a short text message:

I started taking night classes at a community craft school in Portland. I bought my own chisels. I’m sorry for everything, Claire. I’m finally trying to learn how to build.

I stared at the photograph for a long, quiet moment.

I didn't reply to the text. I didn't send money, nor did I invite her back into my life. But as I looked at the image of my sister holding a tool with her own hands for the first time in her life, a soft, genuine peace settled over my heart.

The cycle of dependency had been broken. The hard lesson had finally taken root.

I slipped the phone back into my bag, looking out over the sparkling expanse of the harbor.
