Chapter 6 - The Prelude to the Storm

The next two days passed in a blur of peaceful domestic recovery mixed with the quiet, methodical preparation for absolute legal warfare.

Being home with Lily and Lucas was like medicine for my soul. Without the constant dark cloud of my parents' financial demands hanging over me, without the endless anxiety of waiting for the next "emergency" bill or surprise credit card charge, the air in my home felt lighter, cleaner, and full of joy.

Marcus came over every evening after his shift, bringing takeout, playing lego towers with Lucas, and reading bedtime stories about dragons and princesses to Lily. Watching him interact with my children, seeing the gentle patience in his eyes and the bright, untroubled laughs from my kids, made me realize just how much toxic stress I had normalized in my life for almost a decade.

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Grandpa Arthur and Evelyn Vance were weaving a legal net so tight that my family had zero chance of escape.

On Saturday evening, twenty-four hours before the grand birthday gala, my father made one last desperate attempt to break my resolve.

I was sitting on my back patio, sipping chamomile tea in the cool summer evening air, when a sleek silver BMW pulled up to the curb outside my house.

My father, Richard, stepped out.

He looked terrible. His hair was disheveled, his designer polo shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, and his eyes were red-rimmed and sunken. The sudden freezing of his bank accounts and the looming threat of grand theft charges had clearly shattered his illusion of comfortable, effortless superiority.

He walked up my driveway, his steps heavy, holding a thick manila folder in his shaking hand.

"Myra," he said, stopping at the edge of the patio, refusing to cross into my yard as if he knew I had the authority to call the police on him.

I didn't stand up. I sat comfortably in my wicker armchair, taking a calm sip of tea.

"You're violating my legal boundary, Richard," I said, my voice ice cold. "My attorney explicitly told you to direct all communication through her office."

"Richard?" he echoed, his voice cracking with disbelief and rage. "You’re calling your father by his first name now?! After everything your mother and I did for you?!"

"You mean after everything I paid for you?" I corrected him smoothly. "What do you want?"

Richard took a deep, shuddering breath, trying desperately to regain his authoritative, stern father posture.

"Myra, look," he said, holding up the folder. "This whole lawsuit thing... it’s a massive mistake. You’re emotional because of your accident. We understand that! You were in pain, you were confused, and you thought we were ignoring you. But we were just busy with Vanessa’s career! We didn't know you were that hurt!"

"I told you I was bleeding internally on an ambulance stretcher," I said flatly. "You told me not to be dramatic."

Richard flinched, but quickly tried to brush it aside.

"Words said in haste!" he stammered. "People say foolish things when they’re rushed! But suing your own father?! Freezing my credit?! Demanding Vanessa pay back forty-five thousand dollars she doesn't have?! Myra, you are going to bankrupt us! You are going to put your sister on the street!"

"Vanessa is thirty-six years old," I said, leaning back. "It’s about time she learned what rent costs."

"She’s an artist!" Richard practically screamed. "She has sensitive emotions! She isn't practical like you! You have a high-paying doctor’s salary! You have a career! Why are you being so viciously greedy?!"

I set my teacup down on the small glass table with a soft clink. I stood up slowly, clutching my abdomen slightly as I walked to the edge of the patio, standing three feet away from him, looking down into his desperate, hollow eyes.

"I gave you three hundred and sixty-one thousand dollars," I said, my voice low, precise, and sharper than a surgical scalpel. "I paid for a house you had already paid off, so you could gamble two hundred and fifty thousand dollars on cryptocurrency. I paid for medical bills Mom used for luxury spas. I paid for Vanessa's luxury apartments while she laughed at me bleeding in an ambulance."

Richard’s face drained of all color. His mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water.

"How... how did you..." he stammered, his eyes wide with horror as he realized his secret financial lies were completely exposed.

"My forensic accountants know every single cent, Richard," I whispered. "Every lie. Every fake invoice. Every fraudulent transfer. You didn't just take my money. You stole it through deception."

"Myra, please..." Richard’s voice suddenly turned into a pathetic, whiny plea. He dropped his stern father act entirely, stepping forward, his hands clasped together. "If this goes to court, I could face criminal fraud charges. I could lose the Elmwood house. Your mother will leave me! Vanessa will be ruined! Please... just tell your lawyer to drop the suit! We’ll talk about this at your grandfather's party tomorrow! We can fix this as a family!"

I looked at the man who had raised me. I looked for any sign of remorse, any sign of genuine love, any sign that he cared about my life or my children's future.

There was nothing. Only fear of consequences. Only terror at losing his comfortable, unearned lifestyle.

"We will talk at the party, Richard," I said, turning my back on him and walking toward my back door. "Make sure you wear your best suit."

May you like

"Myra! Wait! Myra!" he yelled behind me.

I stepped inside, locked the glass door, and pulled down the shade.
