Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail

By Monday morning, the war had breached the borders of our family and spilled into the legal and financial halls of the city.

At 9:00 AM, I sat in the glass-walled conference room of Vance & Sterling Legal on the forty-second floor of the Wells Fargo Center. Grandma Eleanor sat at the head of the polished oak table, wearing a burgundy wool dress, while three forensic accountants systematically laid out forty-eight binders of bank statements, tax returns, and property deeds.

"Your mother was surprisingly thorough in her execution, Arya," Mr. Vance noted, sliding a red folder across the table toward me. "Over twelve years, Linda Reynolds operated a systematic diversion scheme."

I opened the folder.

The numbers were staggering:

2014: $15,000 allocated for Arya’s private high school tuition diverted to Madison’s European summer tour.

2017: $45,000 from Arya’s college housing allowance diverted to fund Madison’s sorority dues and designer wardrobe.

2021: $214,000 diverted from the Eleanor Reynolds Educational Trust into Madison and her husband's $850,000 townhouse purchase in Lake Oswego.

2023: $38,000 conversion of the 2024 Honda Passport title (attempted).

"How did my father not see this?" I asked, looking up at my grandmother.

"Arthur didn't want to see it," Eleanor said coldly. "He preferred peace over truth. It’s easier to let a tyrant run the house when you’re not the one being crushed under the wheel."

"What happens now, Mr. Vance?" I asked.

"As trustee of the Eleanor Reynolds Family Holdings," Mr. Vance replied, "Mrs. Reynolds has issued a formal demand for restitution. Your sister and her husband have twenty-one days to cure the $214,000 deficiency, or legal proceedings will commence to force a judicial sale of the Lake Oswego property."

"And my mother?"

Eleanor leaned forward, her silver clips glinting under the recessed lights.

"Your mother," Eleanor said, "has been stripped of her power of attorney over my estate. Furthermore, I have instructed my accountants to audit the Reynolds Family Business."

My eyes widened. "Dad’s architectural firm?"

"Linda has been acting as Chief Financial Officer for Arthur’s firm for fifteen years," Eleanor revealed, a dark, dangerous smile touching her lips. "If she was stealing from my trust to fund Madison’s lifestyle, what do you think she’s been doing to your father’s corporate tax filings?"

Before I could answer, Mr. Vance’s receptionist knocked softly on the glass door.

"Mr. Vance?" the receptionist said nervously. "There is a Mrs. Linda Reynolds in the lobby. She is refusing to leave and is demanding to speak with Miss Arya."

Eleanor didn't even blink. "Tell her to wait."

"No, Grandma," I stood up, smoothing the front of my white blazer. "Don't tell her to wait. Send her in."
