Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Stride

A year passed.
The ocean breeze blew soft and cool across the cliffs of Palos Verdes. I stood on the open patio of my new home—a mid-century modern house built into the hills, overlooking the vast, endless blue expanse of the Pacific Ocean.
My leg had healed completely. I could run, lift, and march without a single twinge of pain. The military medical board had cleared me with full honors, and I had officially transitioned into running our private investment firm, which focused on funding veteran-owned businesses across Southern California.
Below on the driveway, Leo was showing his new girlfriend his restored truck, his laughter floating up on the breeze.
Marcus Vance walked out onto the patio, holding two glasses of wine, handing one to me.
"Your father's parole board petition was formally rejected this morning," Vance reported quietly, leaning against the wooden railing. "He will serve the full seven years."
"And Chloe?" I asked, taking a small sip of wine.
"She’s working as a retail assistant in San Diego," Vance said. "She tried to start a social media channel complaining about the lawsuit, but public backlash was so severe she deleted her accounts. She’s paying back her share of the civil restitution order in monthly installments."
I looked out over the sparkling ocean, watching a sailboat glide silently across the horizon.
There was no anger left in my chest. The rage that had burned inside me in that military clinic in San Diego had dissolved, replaced by a deep, unshakeable peace.
They had thought my leg wasn't worth five thousand dollars. They had thought my brother's future was something they could steal to buy a party on the water. They had treated us like disposable burdens because we didn't fit their shallow, gold-plated world.

But in trying to destroy us, they had forced us to find our real strength.
I set my glass down, took Leo's hand as he walked up the patio stairs, and looked out at the horizon—standing tall, unbowed, and ready for every step of the long, beautiful life ahead.
