Chapter 7 - The Ultimatum

The room fell into an uncomfortable, heavy silence. The sound of the wind howling outside the manor windows seemed to emphasize the massive divide between us.

Mom took a step toward me, her hands trembling as she reached out to grab my arm. "Chloe... darling... please. It's Christmas Eve. Families forgive each other. That's what we do."

I pulled my arm back gently, stepping out of her reach.

"Forgiveness requires truth, Mom," I said. "And the truth is, this family is built on a dynamic where I give, and the rest of you take. If I agree to go back to that lakehouse right now, nothing changes. In three months, Charlotte will demand I watch her kids for a week. In six months, Daniel will ask for another loan. And in a year, you will beg me to fly across the country to do it all over again."

"So what do you want from us?!" Daniel burst out, frustrated. "You want us to get on our knees and beg?!"

"I want three things," I said, pulling out the notepad I had written on earlier at the inn.

My father folded his arms across his chest. "Let's hear them."

"First," I said, reading from the paper, "Charlotte will reimburse me the $1,200 for my flight, since I was brought here under false pretenses to perform labor. Second, Daniel will repay the $5,000 loan he took from me three years ago, with a structured payment plan starting January first."

Daniel gasped. "Five thousand dollars?! I don't have that kind of cash lying around!"

"Then I suggest you sell your jet ski," I replied without blinking. "Third: I am taking a full six-month break from this family. No calls, no texts, no holiday visits. If any of you contact me before June first, I will permanently extend that break."

Mom let out a horrified squeal, covering her mouth with her hands. "Six months?! Chloe, you can't be serious! What about Easter?!"

"I am entirely serious," I said, folding the paper and handing it to my father. "If you accept these terms, I will not send the documented evidence of your behavior to the extended family mailing list. If you refuse, I press send right now, and Grandma Evelyn will personally review every single business grant request Daniel has pending with the family estate trust."

Dad looked down at the paper in his hand, his jaw working silently as he realized he had been completely cornered. He turned to look at Grandma Evelyn, hoping for a sign of support.

Grandma Evelyn simply smiled serenely, took a sip of her tea, and said, "I suggest you sign her agreement, Arthur. Because if she doesn't press send on that email, I certainly will."
