Chapter 7 - The Cleansing of the Land

Six months after the trial ended, the Sterling family empire was systematically dismantled by federal bankruptcy courts and civil receivership boards.

The fifteen-acre Sterling Manor in Greenwich was put up for public auction.

Arthur Vance handled the proceedings on my behalf. Using a portion of the twenty-four million dollar trust left by my father, I purchased the estate at the court auction for twelve million dollars.

Two weeks later, heavy construction machinery arrived at the gates of the Sterling estate.

I stood on the gravel driveway alongside Arthur, Sarah, and Noah, watching as two massive yellow excavators with steel wrecking balls positioned themselves in front of the ten-thousand-square-foot mansion.

"Are you sure you want to do this, Claire?" Arthur asked gently, holding a hard hat under his arm. "The house alone was valued at eight million dollars. You could sell it to a private buyer."

"This house was built on stolen charity money and decades of cruelty, Arthur," I said, my voice peaceful and calm. "I don't want its walls standing. I don't want anyone ever living in its shadow again."

I turned to Noah, giving him a small wooden token painted with a green leaf. "Go ahead, sweetheart. Tell them to begin."

Noah walked over to the chief site engineer, handing him the token. "Start the machines, please."

The chief engineer nodded, blowing a loud whistle.

THUD!

The massive steel ball swung through the air, crashing directly through the grand marble balcony where Margaret had once hosted her elitist charity galas.

Glass shattered, stone crumbled, and dust rose high into the afternoon sky.

Over the next three days, the entire ten-thousand-square-foot mansion was reduced to rubble, hauled away in dozens of dump trucks until nothing remained except flat, open earth under the blue Connecticut sky.

In its place, we broke ground on a new vision.

We hired a team of landscape architects, botanists, and local craftsmen to build the Evan Sterling Memorial Sanctuary and Children's Heart Center—a state-of-the-art non-profit rehabilitation facility and public botanical park dedicated to providing free medical care, genetic counseling, and therapy for children born with congenital heart conditions.

The twelve million dollars stolen by Margaret and Daniel from their fake charity was recovered by federal marshals and legally transferred to endow the center in perpetuity.

Every penny they had tried to hoard was turned into life-saving care for the very children they had despised.
