Chapter 2 - The Inner Circle of Vultures

The thirty-six hours following the arrest of Patricia and Richard Miller sent shockwaves through Charlotte’s high-society circles.

By the next morning, the story was no longer a quiet family secret. The local news channels had picked up the story after Maya’s leak to the mayor's office. Headlines flashed across local broadcasts:

"PROMINENT DEVELOPER AND WIFE ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED MANSLAUGHTER AND ASSAULT ON PREGNANT DAUGHTER AT BABY SHOWER"

Sitting in my private room at the hospital, I watched the television screen with a calm, detached focus. My attorney, Arthur, sat in an armchair beside my bed, sipping black coffee while reviewing a stack of legal documents three inches thick.

"The grand jury was convened this morning in an expedited session due to the severe nature of the evidence," Arthur explained, tapping his pen against a document. "Detective Miller’s team did an extraordinary job. They secured search warrants for your parents’ estate last night."

I looked up from my tea. "What did they find?"

Arthur’s face hardened into a grim line. "More than we anticipated, Savannah. Your mother didn't just forge your signature yesterday. She has been systematically looting your name for the past six years."

A cold feeling settled in my chest. "What do you mean?"

Arthur slid a paper across my lap table. It was a credit report detailing six separate lines of credit opened in my name between 2020 and 2024.

"When you turned twenty-one, your parents had you sign what they claimed were 'routine family trust tax forms,'" Arthur revealed. "In reality, they were open-ended personal guarantees. Patricia used your identity to take out $140,000 in secondary personal loans to fund Brianna’s lavish wedding two years ago, as well as the down payment on Brianna’s four-bedroom house in Myers Park."

I stared at the numbers on the paper. "They put my name on Brianna's house debt?"

"They made you the primary guarantor," Arthur confirmed. "Which means when Brianna's husband, Greg, was fired from his private equity firm six months ago for insider trading, your mother realized the bank was going to initiate foreclosure proceedings against Brianna. If Brianna defaulted, the bank would come after you. And when you refused to hand over your $18,000 savings account voluntarily to cover their immediate missed mortgage payments, Patricia panicked."

"She didn't just panic," I corrected softly, touching my stomach. "She tried to break me so I would obey."

"And now she has broken herself," Arthur said smoothly. "The district attorney has filed formal charges: Aggravated Assault on an Unborn Child, Attempted Manslaughter, Grand Larceny, Wire Fraud, and Identity Theft. Your father is facing charges of Obstruction of Justice, Accessory to Assault, and Destruction of Evidence."

A soft knock sounded at the hospital door.

Maya walked in, carrying a large bag from a local boutique. Behind her stood an unexpected visitor: a tall, elegant woman in her late fifties, dressed in a tailored cream suit, holding a massive bouquet of white lilies and yellow roses.

My breath caught in my throat. It was Eleanor Vance—Arthur’s wife, but more importantly, the head of the Charlotte Historical Preservation Society and one of the most powerful philanthropist matriarchs in the state.

"Savannah, dear," Eleanor said, her voice rich, warm, and comforting as she walked over to my bedside and set the flowers down. "I hope I’m not intruding. Arthur told me what happened, and I simply could not stay away."

"Mrs. Vance... thank you," I murmured, overwhelmed by her presence.

"Please, call me Eleanor," she insisted, taking my hand in hers with a warm, motherly squeeze that felt completely alien to me—a sharp contrast to the cold, conditional touches I had known from Patricia my entire life. "I have known your mother socially for twenty years, Savannah. Patricia Miller was a vain, cruel woman who viewed her children as accessories to her social standing. What she did to you at that pool is an abomination. And I am here to ensure she never holds a place in this city again."

Eleanor turned to her husband. "Arthur, have you initiated the emergency freeze on the Miller Trust accounts?"

"Filed two hours ago, my love," Arthur replied with a faint smile. "Every asset Patricia and Richard own is currently locked beneath a court injunction pending the criminal trial and Savannah’s civil suit."

Maya stepped up to the other side of my bed, pulling a brand-new, high-end smartphone out of her bag.

"I bought you a new phone with a fresh number," Maya said. "Your old phone was processed into evidence by Detective Miller. But before he took it, he pulled the call logs."

"Call logs?" I asked.

"Brianna has called your old number forty-seven times since midnight," Maya revealed, a disgusted curl to her lip. "And when she couldn't reach you, she started calling your employer."

I sat up straight, panic rising in my throat. "My job? Did she try to get me fired?"

"She tried," Maya said, her eyes flashing with anger. "She called your managing partner, Mr. Henderson, crying that you were a bitter, mentally unstable woman who stole money from her family and framed your own mother. She demanded he fire you immediately to 'restore moral integrity' to the firm."

My heart hammered against my ribs. My job at the accounting firm was my lifeline. Without it, even with my savings intact, I couldn't provide for my daughter.

"What did Mr. Henderson say?" I asked, my voice trembling.

Arthur chuckled softly, leaning back in his chair. "Mr. Henderson called me directly at 8:00 AM, Savannah. He is a close personal friend of mine. When I explained that your mother was currently wearing an orange jumpsuit in the county jail because of a video verified by the police department, Henderson laughed in Brianna’s face."

Arthur pulled out an official letter on heavy linen paper and handed it to me.

"In fact," Arthur said proudly, "Mr. Henderson has approved your paid maternity leave starting immediately, with a full three-month salary advance wired to your account, alongside a promotion to Senior Audit Associate upon your return."

I held the letter in my hands, tears blurred my vision once again. For six years, I had worked sixty hours a week at that firm, silently enduring my parents' taunts that I was "just a glorified clerk" while Brianna was a "high-society wife."

For the first time in my life, the world outside my family was looking at me and seeing my worth.

"You are not alone anymore, Savannah," Eleanor Vance said gently, brushing a strand of hair from my forehead. "You have Arthur. You have Maya. And you have me. We are going to protect you and that little girl."

Suddenly, the door to the room swung open again.

A young, terrified-looking security guard stepped inside, looking nervously at Arthur and Eleanor.

"Excuse me, Mr. Vance," the guard stammered. "There's a man downstairs in the lobby demanding to see Miss Savannah. He’s causing a major scene with the front desk staff."

I frowned. "Who is it?"

The guard checked his notepad. "He says his name is Greg Davidson. He claims to be the patient's brother-in-law."
