Chapter 7 - The Grand Exposure

The grand ballroom of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel was packed to capacity. Over two hundred journalists, camera crews, fashion executives, and legal analysts sat crammed into the rows of gold chairs. The air was thick with tension, camera flashes popping like lightning strikes as rumors circulated that I was about to announce my resignation from Harper Lane Global.
In the front row sat the Lowell family.
Margaret wore a conservative black dress, holding a handkerchief to her eyes, looking fragile and heartbroken for the benefit of the surrounding cameras. Ethan sat beside her in a dark grey suit, his arms crossed, trying to project an air of quiet, protective authority. Madison sat on his other side, wearing a soft pink cardigan, looking pale and delicate.
They looked like a family of victims awaiting justice.
At precisely 10:00 AM, I walked onto the stage.
I did not wear black. I wore a striking, tailored crimson dress by Alexander McQueen, paired with gold heels and my dark hair pulled back into a sharp, flawless ponytail. I did not look like a woman in mourning. I looked like a queen stepping onto her throne.
A hush fell over the room. Cameras zoomed in on my face.
I walked up to the podium, looking down at the Lowell family in the front row. Margaret offered me a subtle, sneering smirk from beneath her handkerchief—a silent message that read: You lost.
"Good morning," I began, my voice echoing clearly through the high-grade sound system, calm, steady, and commanding. "Over the past forty-eight hours, a story has been told about me. A story of jealousy, toxicity, and violence. A story crafted by my former husband, Ethan Lowell, and his mother, Margaret."
A murmur rippled through the press corps. Cameras flashed furiously.
"Mr. Lowell and his family have publicly accused me of intentionally poisoning his sister, Madison, resulting in the tragic loss of her pregnancy," I continued, leaning slightly over the podium. "They have called me a monster. They have called for my arrest. They have demanded millions of dollars in restitution from my company."
Margaret let out a soft, audible sob in the front row, dabbing at her eyes, playing her role to perfection.
"I agree with the Lowell family on one point," I said, my voice dropping into an icy register that made the room freeze. "A monster did prepare a toxic brew in my home on the night of August 14th. A monster did intend to murder an unborn child for financial gain."
I paused, reaching into my jacket, and pulled out a small black remote control.
"However," I said, "the monster was not me."
I pressed a button on the remote.
Behind me, the massive forty-foot HD screen—normally used for displaying high-fashion runway shows—instantly turned on.
The room gasped.
High-definition video footage filled the screen. The timestamp read: AUGUST 14 - 06:42 PM.
The video showed the pristine kitchen of my La Jolla mansion. Margaret Lowell stood at the marble island, her face clearly visible in crystal-clear 4K resolution. She opened her purse, pulled out a brown paper packet labeled BLACK COHOSH & ERGOT EXTRACT, and poured the dark powder into a steaming blue porcelain bowl.
Audio echoed through the ballroom speakers, crisp and terrifyingly clear:
"If Vivienne has that baby, everything goes to him. But my Madison is pregnant too, and that man ran away. My daughter will not live poor while this woman sits on millions. Drink it, Vivienne. Lose the child quietly. Then Ethan can divorce you, and this fortune will finally come where it belongs."
The ballroom went completely, terrifyingly silent.
Margaret’s face drained of every drop of blood. She dropped her handkerchief, her mouth falling open in sheer, unadulterated horror. Ethan snapped his head toward the screen, his eyes practically bulging out of his sockets. Madison let out a sharp, choked gasp.
"No..." Margaret whispered, her voice caught in her throat. "No, no, no..."
I didn't stop. I pressed the remote again.
The screen shifted to a second video file, stamped AUGUST 14 - 07:15 PM.
The video showed Madison walking into the kitchen, looking into the fridge, and then spotting the blue bowl on the island. She picked up a spoon, drank the entire bowl in six greedy bites, and walked out.
I pressed the remote a third time.
A series of bank documents, wire transfers, and forged trust agreements illuminated the screen, highlighting Ethan’s embezzlement of three hundred thousand dollars and Margaret’s attempt to seize my company in the event of my death.
The reporters in the room went wild. Shouts erupted across the hall. Journalists stood up from their chairs, cameras pivoting violently from the screen to the front row, focusing on Margaret, Ethan, and Madison.
"As you can see," I said, my voice cutting through the rising chaos like a steel blade, "Margaret Lowell prepared a lethal dose of abortifacient poison intended to destroy my unborn child so her family could steal my company. By a twist of fate, her own daughter consumed the poison she brewed."
I looked directly at Margaret, whose face was now contorted in a silent, horrific scream as a dozen camera crews surrounded her chair.
"I have already turned the raw, unedited footage, the toxicological reports, and the financial audit over to the San Diego District Attorney and the FBI," I concluded, closing my folder. "Margaret Lowell is facing charges of attempted murder, conspiracy, and procurement of illegal toxins. Ethan Lowell is facing charges of grand larceny, corporate forgery, and obstruction of justice."

I stepped away from the podium, looking down at the crumbling wreckage of the family that had tried to destroy me.
"Thank you," I said softly. "The floor is now open for questions."
