Chapter 4 - The Locks at the Spa

By Monday morning, news of the incident at Riviera Maya had not yet reached the broader community of Oakridge, but the financial dominoes were already tumbling at lightning speed.

At 7:30 a.m., Janelle drove her leased Mercedes SUV into the pristine parking lot of Radiance Medical Aesthetics, her high-end med-spa located in the prime commercial shopping plaza on Main Street.

She had cut her trip to Cancun short, leaving her parents behind in Mexico after spending six hours arguing with resort management over wire transfers to pay their bill. Her head was pounding, her eyes were bloodshot behind her sunglasses, and she was desperate to get into her office to check her local business operating accounts.

She parked in her reserved space, marched up to the glass double doors of the spa, and slid her brass key into the lock.

It didn't turn.

She jiggled it. She pulled it back half an inch and tried again.

The lock keyway didn't budge. It felt solid, completely rigid, as if the entire cylinder had been swapped out overnight.

"What the..." Janelle muttered, hammering her fist against the heavy glass door.

She looked through the glass. Inside the sleek, marble-floored lobby, two men in gray work uniforms were standing on ladders, installing security cameras near the reception desk.

Sitting behind her reception counter was not her usual front-desk manager, but a tall, sharp-looking woman in a crisp navy pantsuit holding an iPad.

Janelle pounded on the glass louder. "Hey! Open this door right now! Who are you?!"

The woman behind the counter stood up, walked calmly to the door, slid back a brass deadbolt, and opened one side of the double door just three inches.

"Can I help you?" the woman asked, her tone dry and professional.

"Can you help me?!" Janelle shrieked. "I own this business! Why don't my keys work? Who authorized you to be in my building?!"

"My name is Victoria Sterling," the woman replied, tapping her iPad screen. "I am a senior asset manager representing Vance Commercial Holding LLC."

"This is my spa!" Janelle yelled, trying to push the door open wider.

Victoria didn't move an inch, using her weight to hold the door firmly in place.

"The business entity known as Radiance Medical Aesthetics LLC is indeed owned by you, Ms. Vance," Victoria said calmly. "However, the physical real estate—Unit 104 of the Oakridge Commercial Plaza—is owned entirely by Vance Commercial Holding LLC, under the sole trusteeship of Mr. Brian Vance."

"I pay rent!" Janelle spat.

"You used to pay rent," Victoria corrected her, pulling up a document on her screen. "According to the corporate records, your commercial lease expired on March 31st of last year. For the past fourteen months, you have been operating under an informal occupancy agreement authorized by your father, George Vance—an individual who had no legal management authority over this property."

"He’s the property manager!"

"He was an unauthorized proxy whose agreement ended eight months ago," Victoria stated clearly. "As of 6:00 a.m. today, the primary trustee, Brian Vance, has formally issued a Notice of Immediate Commercial Eviction and Asset Seizure for delinquent rent."

Janelle felt the world tilt on its axis. "Delinquent rent?! I paid forty-five hundred dollars every month into the management account!"

"You paid that money into a secondary account controlled by your mother," Victoria replied, handing a folded paper through the three-inch gap in the door. "None of those funds were ever deposited into the master property holding account. Furthermore, because your medical spa equipment—specifically the three laser skin-resurfacing machines—were purchased using credit lines secured by the master commercial property as collateral, those machines are currently under a legal lien."

Janelle grabbed the paper. It was a formal court-stamped Lien Attachment and Lockout Order.

"You can't take my lasers!" Janelle gasped, terror finally replacing her anger. "I have fourteen client appointments scheduled for today! If I cancel them, my business is ruined!"

"Then I suggest you contact your legal counsel immediately," Victoria said softly. "You have thirty minutes to collect your personal items—your purse, your coat, and your laptop. The medical equipment, client files, and retail inventory remain locked inside pending the completion of the forensic audit."

"Where is Brian?!" Janelle screamed, her voice cracking as tears of pure panic welled in her eyes. "Tell my brother to come down here right now!"

Victoria looked at her watch.

"Mr. Vance is currently at the local passport office with his wife and daughter, expediting an emergency passport application for a private family vacation to Maine," Victoria said smoothly. "He requested that all further communications be routed through Vance & Sterling Legal LLP."

Victoria stepped back and closed the glass door.

Click.

The brass deadbolt slid back into place.

Janelle stood on the sidewalk in her designer clothes, staring through the glass as the locksmiths continued rekeying the interior doors of her life's work. She pulled out her phone, her hands shaking so violently she dropped it onto the concrete.

She picked it up, screen cracked, and dialed Carol.

"Mom!" Janelle sobbed into the phone the second Carol answered from her hotel room in Mexico. "He locked me out! Brian locked the spa! They took the lasers!"

On the other end of the line, Carol didn't answer immediately.

In the background, George could be heard shouting at an airline representative on speakerphone, trying to figure out how they were going to pay five thousand dollars in last-minute one-way flight tickets home after all their cards had been permanently shut down.

"He's coming for George's office next," Carol whispered, her voice stripped of all its former confidence, sounding old, thin, and terrified. "Janelle... what did we do?"
