Chapter 9 - The New Beginning

A year later, the Sterling Corporate Tower hosted its annual charity gala. The event was held in the grand ballroom, decorated with white orchids, crystal chandeliers, and warm golden lighting.

It was a night of celebration. Not only had Sterling Development achieved record-breaking success, but it was also the evening Gabriel Sterling proposed to me in front of our closest friends, family, and partners.

Gabriel had taken me to the rooftop garden under the starlit Phoenix sky. He knelt down—not out of weakness or fear, but out of profound love and respect—holding an exquisite emerald ring.

“Penelope,” Gabriel said, his voice filled with deep sincerity. “You are the strongest, most brilliant, and most graceful woman I have ever known. You protect those you love with unyielding fierce devotion, yet your heart remains gentle and kind. I want to build a life with you, honor you, and walk beside you as your equal for the rest of my days. Will you marry me?”

Tears of pure joy filled my eyes. I looked down at this incredible man who respected my power, cherished my mother, and stood by my side with unwavering loyalty.

“Yes, Gabriel,” I whispered softly. “A thousand times, yes.”

When we walked back into the ballroom to announce our engagement, the room erupted into cheers and applause.

My brother Ethan raised a glass of champagne, roaring with laughter and pride. Arthur Vance toasted to our future, smiling like a proud father. And my mother stood in the center of the room, looking breathtaking in an emerald silk gown, surrounded by prominent leaders who competed for the honor of speaking with her.

During the party, my assistant Sarah walked over and leaned in close to me.

“Ms. Vance-Sterling,” Sarah whispered quietly. “I thought you should know... Michael Coleman called the front desk again today.”

I paused, sipping my champagne. “What did he want?”

“He begged to send a letter of apology to your mother. He said he’s living in poverty and asked if you could lift the industry blacklist so he could find a basic drafting job.”

I looked over at my mother, who was currently laughing joyfully as she shared a story about her farm with the Governor of Arizona. I looked at Gabriel, whose arm was wrapped lovingly around my waist. Then I looked out at the city lights glowing beneath us.

I turned back to Sarah with a calm, peaceful smile.

“Tell him,” I said softly, “that the Vance family has moved forward. We do not look back at the trash we left behind. Wish him well, and block his number permanently.”

“Understood, boss,” Sarah smiled and walked away.

The past was dead. The debt had been paid. The parasites were gone, and my life was finally mine again.
