Chapter 7 - The Restructuring

Six months after the trial.

The headquarters of the Santillán Group in Santa Fe towered fifty stories over the business district of Mexico City.

Inside the grand board room on the top floor, twenty regional directors and international investors sat around a massive oval glass table.

At the head of the table stood Mateo Santillán, wearing a crisp dark suit, pointing to a giant digital display showing green financial projections.

"By closing the offshore shell companies and reinvesting forty percent of our executive bonuses directly into the port logistics infrastructure in Veracruz," Mateo explained smoothly, "we have reduced our operational debt by sixty-five percent in six months. The board of trade has officially upgraded our credit rating back to AAA."

The room erupted into enthusiastic applause. The senior director, an elderly man who had served under Mateo’s father, stood up and shook Mateo’s hand warmly.

"You saved this company, Mateo," the director said with genuine emotion. "Your father would be immensely proud of the man you've become."

"My father built a business," Mateo smiled softly. "I'm just making sure it serves the people who actually do the work."

An hour later, the board meeting concluded. The executives filed out, leaving Mateo standing by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out over the sprawling city below.

The door to the private office opened, and Valeria stepped in, carrying a small canvas bag. She was wearing a lovely summer dress, her skin glowing, and held little Sofia—now a chubby, giggling one-year-old—in her arms.

"Am I interrupting the powerful CEO?" Valeria teased softly, leaning against the door frame.

Mateo turned around, his face instantly transforming into a radiant, joyful smile that erased every line of executive stress from his forehead.

"You could never interrupt me, my love," he said, walking across the room and pulling both of them into a tight embrace, kissing Valeria deeply before scooping Sofia into his arms, tossing her gently in the air as she squealed with delight.

"How did the meeting go?" Valeria asked, pulling a container of homemade tamales from her canvas bag and setting it on his multi-million-dollar executive desk.

"The restructuring is complete," Mateo smiled, sitting down in his leather chair and pulling Sofia onto his lap. "The company is stable. I signed the paperwork thirty minutes ago to transfer operational management to an executive committee."

Valeria raised an eyebrow. "An executive committee?"

"I don't need to be here five days a week anymore, Vale," Mateo said, looking up at her with clear, shining eyes. "I spoke with the board. I will remain as Chairman of the Board, attending quarterly meetings, but my daily work is done. The farm in Tepoztlán is finished."

Valeria’s heart skipped a beat. "Finished?"

"The house is painted," Mateo nodded, tears of happiness rising in his eyes. "The bougainvillea is blooming. The garden has a swing set for Sofia. We move on Saturday."

Valeria covered her mouth with both hands, letting out a soft, weeping laugh of pure joy. She rushed around the desk, throwing her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder as Sofia clapped her tiny hands between them.
